Continue ReadingAs the high school regular season winds down here in Oregon, the same is happening on the other side of the country for some former in-state prep stars. Kelton Samore is hoping to finish his prep year at Bridgton Academy on a strong note and then the Grant High School graduate is looking forward to the future. The skilled 6-foot-9 forward has picked up a number of new scholarship offers while he’s been out on the East Coast and is starting to sort out his college recruitment with the year coming to a close.
For Samore, the prep year has been fruitful. He’s been working on getting physically stronger while continuing to work on his game. “I’ve been focusing more on stuff besides just scoring the ball as that was the biggest thing I was doing for the most part the first half of the year,” Samore said. “So I’ve been focusing on facilitating and rebounding the ball, which I’ve definitely improved on.”
College programs have been tracking him ever since he got on campus there in Maine and as Samore hoped going in, he’s picked up some offers. He notes that Dartmouth, Brown, Cal Baptist, and Idaho have all offered recently and he’s also been talking to Columbia, Penn, and Wyoming. One official visit has been set up.
“I’m going to take an official visit to Dartmouth the week after next which I’m looking forward to,” Samore said. “I’m looking at them very seriously and I fit into their offense and scheme really well. I’m starting to get a good relationship with the whole coaching staff and we’ve been talking a lot. They’ve been recruiting me for months now.”
Samore didn’t rule out the possibility of committing after making his visit but for now is also planning on taking some others, with Brown, Columbia, and Wyoming as the frontrunners for trips. While he still lists some West Coast schools, the possibility of him staying out East is looking very real.
“Academics have always been pretty important to me,” Samore said. “The Ivy League as a league has been getting better and better and more and more competitive, and that paired with the degree is pretty powerful for me and speaks a lot. So I’m looking pretty seriously at those.”
As Samore starts making his trips, there’s still a season left to play out with Bridgton. It’s been a year with some ups and downs, but the forward is hoping to finish things off strong.
“We started off 11-3 but in our last ten we’ve gone like 2-8, so it’s been tough,” Samore said. “But a good amount of them have been within five (points). I’ve missed the last three due to a mid-foot sprain. So it’s been a bit of a rough patch, but after the next few games playoffs start and we’re still right in the mix of it. We’ll try to get a win or two and go as far as we can, hopefully we’ll peak at the right time.”
Samore ranked #5 in the PrepHoops Oregon Class of 2018 rankings.
