The sharp-shooting 6-foot-2, 180-pound guard has seen increased attention from opponents as the Lakers top gun this year, and it’s somewhat forced him to change his game a bit. College programs continue to clamor for his services but right now, Angle is enjoying the present and hoping for big things for him and his teammates over the next month.
“It’s been a great ride,” Angle said. “I love each and every one of my teammates so to have this experience with them, it’s been super cool. But it’s something that we set as a goal in the fall, so to be here in our situation it’s not surprising.”
Angle has certainly done his part to lead the Lakers. While he remains in our opinion, the state’s top shooter, increased defensive attention from opponents have led to some games where clean looks are hard to come by. This has led to Angle making some changes but they have been ones that have no doubt helped the team.
“There have been times where I’ve struggled to find my jumpshot but I’ve definitely honed in on doing the other things,” Angle said. “I feel like I’ve rebounded the ball really well especially on the defensive end and I’ve definitely improved as a perimeter defender. But as we come down the stretch, I’m not as concerned about how I’m shooting as long as we continue to get wins over good teams and handle our business.”
Some business Angle has been handling on his own has been his college recruitment. He’s applied to Claremont, Williams, Brandeis, and Washington University in St. Louis, and Angle notes that Williams and Claremont have been the main ones keeping in touch frequently. It’s not a secret that he’s had the dream of attending and playing basketball at an Ivy League school, so Angle has started to investigate another possible path for next year.
“Prep school is also an option – I’ve talked to a couple of schools in the NEPSAC, which is (the conference) where (former Jesuit star) Cam Parker went and played,” Angle said. “So that’s also an option, but I’ve got some time to figure it out. But right now the number one focus is the season and once that’s wrapped up, I’ll set my mind to it and start to figure some things out.”
One thing that’s not hard for Angle to figure out is he and his Laker teammates want to get to the Chiles Center – something they just missed out on last year.
“I feel like we’ve done a good job so far but just focus on getting better every single day,” Angle said. “As a team last year, we made tremendous strides throughout the season but to come up one point short in a double overtime game just reminds us that every rep we do in practice, every day we come in, every minute we spend together in the gym or outside – it can come into crucial importance as we come into March. So just focusing in on the little things and that’s hopefully what will propel us to where we want to go.”
Angle currently ranks as the #7 player in the PrepHoops Oregon Class of 2019 rankings.
