The Cougars have had their bumps and bruises moving up to the 6A level and the Mountain Valley League has certainly tested their mettle. Through it all there’s been one constant, Chase McClain. The steady 6-foot-2, 185-pound guard has been the rock all year long and his hope is that college coaches will pull the trigger on some scholarship offers as he tries to lead his team deep into the playoffs.
“It’s been a process of learning that we can be physical and adapt to both (home and away) environments when we play other teams,” McClain said. “But I’ve been doing really well. I’ve been trying to increase more of my assists and get a lot more rebounds and trying to make the game more about not me indivudually but the whole team being a threat to any team we play.”
McClain has appreciated the opportunity to play against top competition on a nightly basis – the likes of Jaden Nielsen-Skinner (South Salem), Justin Scoggin (West Salem), and Mason Lomax and Kobe Withers (Sprague) just to name a few. “It’s always fun playing against them,” McClain said. “We’re just kids playing ball and competing with each other. All of them have been really nice and no matter what happens we pay our respects to each other.”
MCClain continues to hear from a number of college programs and it’s all over the map in terms of level from Division I programs such as Eastern Washington, Cal State Fullerton, and Portland, Division IIs like Central Washington and Northwest Nazarene, Division IIIs like Linfield and George Fox, and JC programs such as Lane and Linn-Benton.
“I’m hoping to get offered and I think the playoffs will hopefully open up some coaches eyes,” McClain said. “I’m not really sure about it right now, I’m just waiting for the season to get over. It’s been building relationships with the coaches so far.”
A deep run into the post-season will definitely help matters. MCClain is hoping for the best. “Honestly it’s going to be a whole team effort,” McClain said. “We need to play our best that we’ve played this year and in the post-season we probably won’t get the home court advantage so we’ll definitely need to bring up the intensity, energy, and grittiness into games.”
McClain currently ranks as the #13 player in the PrepHoops Oregon Class of 2019 rankings.
