The solid 6-foot-7, 215-pound post simply shows up each and every night, doing the dirty work down low for McNary while facing defenses geared towards stopping him. Smith recently made a decision on what he’ll be doing after high school but for now is reflective on how this year of hoops has gone – and will hopefully go with a run in the post-season.
“It’s been a pretty good season so far for me,” Smith said. “The low block has always been good for me, but I’ve been double and triple teamed most games so my numbers are down a little bit, but my mid range has been pretty good.”
We got a chance to see Smith this season in a game against Sprague and in that contest he operated against a collapsing zone – something he’s seen a lot of this year. A classic back-to-the-basket post, Smith was no doubt getting some college recruiting interest but he’s decided to take a different route with his career.
“So I was getting recruited to Linn-Benton and a couple of other community colleges and Corban,” Smith said. “But I’ve decided to enlist in the Air Force. Just looking at the opportunities and my future and wanting to go into the engineering field, I thought that was the best option for me.”
Smith noted that while he’s looking at this season as his last year of basketball, he’s not completely shutting the door on college hoops. He’s fully aware that going into the military completely preserves his college eligibility and that the option to come back in the future is certainly a possibility. But Smith is focused now on the future he has planned – one that hopefully also includes a run in the post-season.
“Everyone is pretty excited about the playoffs and it should be fun,” Smith said. “If we play together we can compete with the top teams in the state. We beat South Salem who was ranked #2 at the time at their place the first time and we just lost to them by three this past Friday, so I think we can play with anybody.”
Smith currently ranks as the #50 player in the PrepHoops Oregon Class of 2019 rankings.
