The Rockets were 19-8 last year with the 6-foot-3 Gunderson leading the way. Randolph was expected to be good but at 19-2 and ranked 8th in the state the Rockets have played even better than expected. And Gunderson has been better than expected.
Wins over Hayfield and Rushford-Peterson have highlighted the season and consistency against teams that Randolph should beat has led them to where they are.
“The season so far is what we all expected from the coaches to players,” Gunderson said. “We were young last year with no seniors and got eliminated in the first round of playoffs.
“So going into this year we wanted to prove something to everyone. As for me I’ve worked harder then I ever have going into this year from late night shooting to open gyms trying to get our chemistry better as a team. So far it’s paying off.”
Playing at a high level Randolph has as good of a chance to win 1A as anybody. It’s a tough task but one that Randolph is excited for.
“Our section is special any year it can be someone different winning it,” Carsyn said. “But this year it’s gonna be Spring Grove, Rushford, and Hayfield that will be the biggest challenges in the section.”
And the way the Rockets are playing they should draw home playoff games meaning teams having to battle in a tough environment.
“Our gym is packed. Our gym usually never gets packed but this year it’s different. The energy in the gym on Tuesday and Friday nights is incredible. Since Randolph is a small school I enjoy the end of the game when all the elementary kids come over to me and say good game or they bring up a play or move I did.”
Those moves will be remembered by many in Randolph for years to come. Gunderson has the talent to play college basketball at the next level and it’s time that schools start to look into what Carsyn and his program are doing. Some are and that’s because this Gunderson kid can play.
“(I’m) well rounded,” Gunderson said. “I take pride in my defense. I see the floor very well to get my teammates the best looks possible and I’m able to score at all three levels.”
Carsyn is looking for a program close to home, and one that will help him grow.
“I want my college to be close to home. Definitely a sports college and also good academics. Northland in Wisconsin and RCTC is Rochester are the schools in contact. And that’s about it.”
At the moment Gunderson has two simple goals.
“Make it to state and play college basketball!”
