The 5-foot-8 floor general has always been a defensively sound player with a pass-first mentality, but it’s his ability to shoot the rock that he’s been working to refine of late.
“I’ve been focusing on a lot of shooting. I know I need to be a premier shooter in order to be a better guard,” said Saunders. “People know that I like to pass, but adding the shooting to my game would be a big step to becoming a better point guard.”
Saunders’ role has increased dramatically since last season, and it’s his leadership duties that has changed the most. He’s hoping to lead the Gaels to a state tourney in the next month.
“My role has changed since last year, this year I’m more of a leader. I think I’ve been playing good so far,” said Saunders.
“Team goals are to win our league championship, and if we’re healthy we think we can do that. And we think we can make a good run at a state championship.”
When his junior season is complete, Saunders will head into an important offseason with Team Arsenal 17U. “It’s a great opportunity to play with them. This year I’ve been getting a couple looks,” said Saunders.
Sonoma State, Cal State East Bay, Loyola Marymount, Eastern Washington, Cal Poly and UC Irvine have all been in the mix early on with his recruitment.
“Recruitment-wise, I just hope I get an offer from one of those schools,” said Saunders.
