Continue ReadingUnion High School is advancing through the post-season and while the Titans are certainly led by their experienced senior class, it’s a junior that’s also made a huge difference this year. Tanner Toolson has emerged as a de facto force on the court and the 6-foot-4, 180-pound swingman isn’t done impressing. He’s made big strides in his game to get on the radar screen and the sky may be the limit, especially if Union goes on to the state tournament.
“Honestly this team is amazing,” Toolson said. “We’re all together and we’re family which is why we’re so good. We might not be the most skilled every time we go out and play but we all play together. That’s why we’re 21-0.”
Toolson has certainly contributed to the success. In Union’s opening post-season win over Sumner, he showed the ability to score at all three levels, and was a key contributor on the boards as well. He’s a skilled player who has just begun to scratch the surface of his natural talent.
“I’ve really increased my game and expanded my versatility this season,” Toolson said. “I’m just hoping to keep that up. I just grinded in the weight room and put in the work, grew a few inches, and now I’ve been able to play to the best of my ability.”
The son of former NBA and international basketball player Andy Toolson, Tanner Toolson has also seen older brother Conner play college ball Utah Valley. So it would make sense that he would also be hoping to play college ball, and while schools like Eastern Washington, Chaminade, and Lewis-Clark State are starting to show some interest, it’s still early for Toolson when it comes to his college recruitment.
“I’m just playing it one game at a time and see what’s out there,” Toolson said. “I’m just happy to play high school hoops right now and not looking at that too much, trying to focus on the playoffs and whatever’s next.”
Clearly what’s next for Toolson and Union are more playoff games, and it’s Toolson’s hope that the ride keeps on going. “We just have to stay together like we have all season and we can beat anyone in the state,” Toolson said. “Our goal is to win state every year and I think we can do it with this special group.”
