Prospect Spotlight: Spencer Mackey (2021)
When mentioning the state’s best sophomore shooters, 6-foot guard Spencer Mackey certainly needs to be included in the conversation.
The LeMars sharpshooter is not only among the Class of 2021’s best shooters, but one of the state’s best, regardless of class.
Mackey also has been working to become a more complete offensive threat.
“One of my biggest strengths is shooting from the perimeter, and this past offseason I really worked on getting to the hoop and working to finish over bigger guys,” said Mackey, who’s made 54 3s at a 44 percent clip this season.
“This year, my impact on the team is to be one of the main scorers and contributing from the 3-point line and just trying to score in any way possible.”
Mackey and his Bulldogs have had a topsy-turvy season. They started 3-1, before dropping six straight, but have gone 9-3 since the losing skid.
“We started off pretty strong and then hit a wave of games where the competition got harder and we didn’t play well,” said Mackey, who said he and the guys “found their groove” at Christmas break.
“We’re going to step it up again for playoff time, and I’m looking to forward to contributing as a scorer and contributing in any way I can to help us get the W.”
When Mackey’s sophomore season is complete, he’ll head into an offseason schedule with South Dakota Attack 16U.
“I’m really excited for that, to travel the country and play against the best competition, and work on some skill-development, too,” said Mackey, who’s hoping to see his recruitment ramp up this summer.
“I’ve got a couple small schools talking to me and I’m looking to hopefully get on some bigger schools’ radars this summer with Attack; and hopefully see my recruitment increase my junior and senior season.”
