Continue ReadingSeaside’s success has often come from its senior class and that certainly is the case this year. But the Seagulls also have a significant contributor in their lineup this year that’s a junior and that young man is Ryan Hague. The hard-nosed 6-foot-2, 180-pound guard has been working his tail off on both ends of the floor, doing all he can to fire up his team as Seaside chases a third consecutive 4A title.
Watch the Seagulls play and you’ll immediately notice Hague. He plays with maximum effort and his motor is endless. Hague can score from the perimeter or off the bounce and he’s got a spot where he really operates well from. “My favorite area is that free throw line high post area and I feel like I can work hard there,” Hague said. “I can get people open there and drive and get my points there – I love shooting that shot. I also feel like I’ve gotten a lot better at that one-dribble pull-up.”
Even though he’s just a junior, Hague has started to get the attention of college coaches. While he declined to name specific schools, he’s currently hearing from some Division III and NAIA programs. He’s appreciative of the interest but currently is focused on getting more on the radar screen of a D-II program.
“I’m focused on Point Loma and trying to get them to notice me,” Hague said of the school in the San Diego area. “I’ve reached out to them and I’m going to go camp there in the summer. It’s beautiful there – I like the college and I’ve seem them play a little bit and it seems like my kind of basketball there. I like what I see from the coach and I think it would be a good environment for me.”
Something Hague feels Point Loma has is reflective of what he’s looking for a college program in general. “The team aspect – I like seeing more of a team and not individual work,” Hague said. “I could do that there and be a leader on that team because I feel like I’m a leader at heart and over the years I feel like I could help them being a leader.”
There’s plenty of time for Hague with his college recruitment. The immediate order of business is the season. The Seagulls dropped a thriller to Banks in the regular season finale on Thursday, but face them again on Saturday and may see them as many as two times more this year. It’s a rivalry worth watching but Hague knows what it will take for Seaside to come out on top.
“We’re athletic and talented,” Hague said. “But I think in order for us to beat Banks or to go far in the playoffs, we’re going to have to figure out how hard we have to practice and work hard on each other so we all get better, and then in games not be selfish.”
Hague currently ranks as the #49 player in the PrepHoops Oregon Class of 2020 rankings.
