Prospect Spotlight: Matt Stilwill (2020)
After graduating eight seniors last season, the Dowling Catholic would entered its 2018-19 campaign looking for the next man up: Matt Stilwill has been that guy.
The 6-foot guard is best at the blow-by, his speed and athleticism are his best attributes. He uses those strengths well on both sides of the ball.
“I definitely use my athleticism to help my team the best I can. I’m pretty good at getting to the rim, and my outside shot can always improve,” said Stilwill, who is among the CIML’s steals leaders this season.
“I take pride in my defense, and so does my team. Defense matters, so I just try and stay active and do what I can.”
He’s also leading the Maroons with 12.7 points per game.
“We graduated eight seniors that played last year, so it was kind of just next man up,” Stilwill said. “I’m just trying to help my team out and trying to win. I got my number called, and I’m playing well.”
The Maroons have been playing exceptionally well of late, winners of five out of six after a 5-8 start to the season.
“We’re peaking at the right time, and we’re just trying to make a run here at the end. And, obviously, the ultimate goal is Wells Fargo Arena, and trying to make it there,” said Stilwill.
This spring and summer will be a big one for the Class of 2020. Stilwill again plans to play with the ultra-talented All Iowa Attack squad. He’s a football standout as well, but says though he loves being a multi-sport athlete, basketball is definitely his main sport.
So far, recruitment has been slow for Stilwill. That should change this summer while playing with his All Iowa Attack team, especially after the very strong junior year he’s having.
“It’s a great team, and I love the guys I play with. We had a great season last year, and we’re looking to get after it again this year,” he said.
“We’re just looking for some exposure and to get better.”
