Prospect Spotlight: Darren Richardson (2022)
Few freshman in Class 4A made a bigger splash than Iowa City High guard Darren Richardson did this season.
A 5-foot-11 guard, Richardson averaged 6.8 points in 15 games for the Little Hawkeyes this season. He was a utility player for City High, who took pride in having a good attitude.
“I’m a pretty good ball-handler, I can shoot the 3, and I’m mostly good at driving. I’m a good passer, I can see the floor well,” said Richardson.
“I’m an all-around player and can play any position on the court. And I just bring energy and leadership out there. Even if we’re losing, or we’re down, I always have a positive attitude. I try and be a great teammate, too.”
The Little Hawkeyes finished the season 5-17; despite the poor record, Richardson got some good experience, and is certainly a key part of their future.
“I thought I played my role, but I think I could have done better than I did,” said Richardson. “We didn’t have the season that we wanted, but I tried to stay positive.”
He’ll play with the Iowa Barnstormers 15U this spring and summer, it’s his third year with the program. He’ll also be involved with football come summertime, a sport he takes just as seriously as he does basketball.
“I’m balancing between basketball and football right now, sometimes it’s basketball, sometimes it’s football,” said Richardson.
His goals moving forward are simple: to get better and make it to Wells Fargo Arena.
“My sophomore year I’m just trying to get my team to Wells Fargo, and I feel like we’ll have the guys to do that,” said Richardson. “And I just want to have success with my career, on and off the court.”
