Prospect Spotlight: Corey Phillips (2022)
Ames could very well have the best pair of freshman in Iowa.
Lots has been made of Tamin Lipsey, he’s the state’s top 2022 prospect; and 6-foot-5 forward Corey Phillips is another top-rated freshman in Iowa.
A big and versatile combo-forward, Phillips has been the third-leading scorer for one of the state’s best teams.
“I think I’m best at being able to stretch the floor, and I can also play inside, so I can play inside or out,” said Phillips. “I’m pretty good at driving the ball, I’m a pretty good passer, I like to get my teammates open with screens and stuff like that.”
His scoring has been beneficial for the Little Cyclones, but it’s his ability to do the things that don’t show up in the stat-book which makes him most impactful.
“My role is to get my teammates open. One of my roles is to be a screener, but I can also score whenever I need to. But it’s more important for me to get my teammates open,” said Phillips.
Ames (15-4) received a bye in the first round of substate, and will play Des Moines Lincoln in a semifinal game on Friday. Ames, along with Des Moines North are the favorites to win the bracket and head to state.
“We just want to take it one game a time and continue to get better,” said Phillips. “We’re not a finished product, we want to keep getting better and take it to a higher level and make it to state.”
As soon as his freshman season is finished, Phillips will play his 15U offseason with All Iowa Attack.
“I’m really looking forward to being able to play with people from other schools, like the guys from 3A schools and 2A schools,” said Phillips. “My goals are to just get better, I want to be a better shooter, a better passer, and just make my game more complete.”
