Continue ReadingNate Totel had only played a limited amount of recreational basketball before he arrived at Centaurus High School as a freshman.
That hasn’t stopped him from steadily improving each year and now, as a senior, Totel is rounding into form for a top-10 team in Colorado Class 4A. He’s also showing that he may be worthy of a look at the next level, especially considering his projectability as a relative newcomer to the sport.
“A lot of it kind of depends on him,” Centaurus head coach Travis Maron said. “He’s probably not going to pick something purely based on basketball. He really cares about his future outside of basketball and he might be a little bit picky because he knows that basketball doesn’t last forever. But any school would be lucky to have him because he’s a high character kid.”
Totel is 6-foot-4, solid and strong. He averages 11.4 points, 6.2 rebounds and nearly a block per game for the No. 10-ranked Warriors. He has flashed impressive scoring potential with games like the 29 points he scored against Niwot on Jan. 22 and the 23 points he posted against Northridge on Jan. 25.
Primarily utilized in the post with the Warriors, Totel also has a developing perimeter game that a player of his size would likely need in the college game. He has also been working on his ball-handling with the Boulder Bulls and has, at times, been limited by injuries through stretches of the past two seasons.
“He just continues to skyrocket because of how late in the game he got into it. Just with the way we play, we more often like to get him inside and let him go to work there. But she’s developing into a good shooter and his footwork is improving so if we pulled him out on the wing against a zone, I’d have no problem with him knocking down a couple threes.”
Totel has been trying to make the most of whatever exposure he can get this season. Luckily for him, it’s looking like the Warriors are poised for a postseason run and he’ll get plenty of more opportunities to show how far he has come in the past four years.
