None of this comes as a surprise to Juwon Esuk. The efficient 6-foot-3, 175-pound senior has been confident in the abilities of himself and his teammates and as Westview finishes out the season, Esuk has a good feeling about how the results will turn out.
“We’re just taking it one game at a time,” Esuk said. “Whoever’s up next on the schedule, we play hard no matter what. We’re fighting for third but we’re trying to get to second and hopefully win league. The season has had its ups and downs but we’re doing what we’re doing, we’re staying together staying as a team and trying to win every game out. Like coach says, we do what we do and the games will take care of itself.”
Going into Wednesday night’s matchup at Beaverton, Westview stands at 7-3 in Metro League play, alone in second place. Their final game of the year is against Jesuit on Friday night and a win there could help them earn a share of the league title. Esuk has been a big contributor to the success. He’s been utilized up front due to Westview’s relative lack of size, but his length, athleticism, and motor have helped him compensate. Esuk has been extremely efficient offensively and it’s been coming along as the season has progressed.
“I’ve been playing solid,” Esuk said. “Of course I can get better at things but I’m trying to help my team win, that’s all that matters. I started off the year shooting pretty bad but I’ve been picking that up, shooting at least 50 percent every game. I like where I’m at but I’ve got a lot of stuff to work on and hopefully get better.”
Esuk is hopeful that however far Westview goes won’t be the end of his basketball career. While he declined to name any schools at the moment, Esuk is hopeful that recruiting interest will continue to pick up and he’s looking at all options for the next step.
“My dream is to play college ball and hopefully go further, overseas, the league, wherever it takes me,” Esuk said. “I want to play this game my whole life and hopefully make a career out of it. So wherever the Lord takes me – prep school, four-year, community (college) – whatever happens happens. I’m just going to work my hardest and grind, do what I do.”
A strong end to the season will certainly grab the attention of college coaches and Esuk is honed in on finishing strong. “We’ve just got to play every game and focus in,” Esuk said. “We’re capable of winning every game on the schedule going into the playoffs and going deep. We’re capable of anything.”
