The two games in Region 4A could honestly go either way with how well all four teams have been playing of late. No. 1 seed Tea Area starts their postseason action after getting a first-round bye earlier this week. The Titans will take on No. 4 seed Vermillion at 7 p.m. for a spot in the SoDak 16.
In the first matchup of these teams, Tea Area easily handled the Tanagers, 76-40 en route to an undefeated regular season against South Dakota competition. Vermillion finished the season 12-8 with two big wins over Class B powerhouse Bridgewater-Emery and Dell Rapids. The Tanagers had a three-game losing streak six games out but finished the season on a three-game win streak. During the losing streak, Vermillion lost by an average of fewer than nine points to top tier teams in the state.
Vermillion’s Sam Ward and Max Mayer have really up their game up late in the season. Mayer averaged 18 points a game during the season-ending three-game win streak. For Tea Area, they dominated regular season play against region teams. The Titans defeated four-of-the-six region teams by 30-plus points with Lennox giving them the biggest scare by far on the season only losing by one point. Dakota Valley lost by 10 in the first game of the season at Tea Area.
In the other SoDak 16 qualifying game, Lennox and Dakota Valley face off again after the Panthers defeated them at home last time they faced each other. The Orioles had one of their best regular seasons in the past couple of years and took Tea Area down to the wire, this will be a good game. Paul Bruns and Charlie Cox will be crucial for the Panthers if they want to repeat their success against the Orioles.
