Region 3A
Last night first round region action started in Class A boys and boy did it give us upsets. No. 6 seed Garretson (3-17) upset No. 3 seed West Central (13-7) 53-52 on Tuesday night in Hartford. Former PHD Player of the Week Drew Blosmo continued his hot season to lead the Blue Dragons to a huge first-round win. The Trojans defeated Garretson earlier this season on Jan. 10, 51-42 but were upended in the postseason. The Blue Dragons advance to take on No. 2 seed Dell Rapids on Friday at 8 p.m. in the Elmen Center.
In the other first-round game in Region 3A, No. 5 seed Tri-Valley faced off against No. 4 seed Baltic. The Mustangs got the better of Baltic this past week grabbing the 54-53 win. This time around Baltic got the better of Tri-Valley defeating them 60-55 on Tuesday night to advance to take on No. 1 seed SF Christian on Friday at 6:30 p.m. in the Elmen Center.
After a couple of first-round surprises and close games, I don’t expect the second round games to be the same. Garretson has now only won four games on the season and just lost to Dell Rapids last week by 20. Not a whole lot can change in a weeks time even if Blosmo goes off for 30-plus. The Rentz twins and Logan Heim will overpower the Blue Dragons and shut down any offense they try to create.
In the No. 1 vs. No. 4 matchup, the Bulldogs don’t have any better shot at winning than Garretson does. Baltic ended the season on a four-game losing streak that included losing to Class B Dell Rapids St. Mary 65-48 and a 72-53 loss to McCook Central/Montrose. The Chargers have only lost to one S.D. school (Tea Area) on the season and has defeated two Class AA teams, a 3A team in Iowa and a very talented St. Thomas More team by double digits. Seniors Gavin Schipper and Mitchell Goodbary are too good for the Bulldog defense to stop.
Predictions
SF Christian will easily take down Baltic to advance to the SoDak 16 as well as Dell Rapids defeating Garretson. As far as seeding for the SoDak 16, both SF Christian and Dell Rapids should be a top-6 seed. The Chargers should be a No. 2 seed behind Tea Area if they make it through to the SoDak 16.
