We caught up with two time state champ to catch up on his senior season & what his plans for college might entail.
“We have high expectations this season. We basically have our entire team back from last year’s state title team, so we know that we have a target on our back & are going to get everyone’s best shot.” “It took us a while to get going this season & we had a couple of tough losses at Marshfield & Stayton (both Top 6 teams in the OSAA rankings), but are playing a lot better since Christmas with wins over some bigger schools, plus a home win over #2 Banks.” The Seagulls & Braves will reconnect with the Cowapa League title & likely #1 overall seed on the line this Thursday at Banks.
As for how Januik sees the strengths & weaknesses of his game, he had this to say, “I think I’m a pretty good scorer that can knock down shots and finish at the rim. I also do a good job of taking care of the basketball and don’t turn it over much. I need to continue to improve athletically, which should help me be a better rebounder. We aren’t very big, so we all have to do our part on the boards. I’d also like to improve from the free throw line.” When it comes to his future, Januik, a 4.0 student, is still unsure of his college plans. I’ve been talking to some of the local D3 schools and junior colleges. My older brother, 2017 4A state player of the year Jackson, starts at George Fox, so it would be fun to play with him again. I’m going to focus on the season and worry about college when we are done in March.”
Seaside which currently sits at #1 in the most recent OSAA ranking as well as the Prep Hoops weekly Elite 8 Small School rankings would make class 4A history if they were to win their 3rd straight title next month. Since the state went to six classes, they are the only team to repeat at the 4A level. Only West Linn & Jesuit (both 6A programs) have won more than two titles in a row. With Januik, senior wing Payton Westerholm, & junior wing Ryan Hague leading the way, we like Seaside’s chances of achieving the three peat.
