PHD Playoff Central. Class A and Class B had several contests in most of the eight regions of each. Tonight Region 8 has games and their will be one game on Thursday as well. The biggest load of games will be played this Friday and Saturday when getting out to a basketball game/games will be in the best interest of fans everywhere.
The Big Stage. Tonight four different locations will host games in Class B basketball from Region 8. Sixth ranked Timber Lake hosts Tiospaye Topa with Tucker Kraft and Brayden PayPay leading the way. The Thunderhawks have won six games this year so they have an uphill battle this evening. The Lemmon Cowboys are 16-4 on the season and have no seniors on the roster. Junior Peyton Anderson and sophomores Cody Thompson and Jaden Kelly have led the way for the Cowboys. Faith faces Wakpala and Harding County takes on Bison in the other games this evening.
Upset City. #6 Garretson over #3 West Central, #6 Faulkton Area over #3 Leola/Frederick Area. Six seeds facing beating three seeds is usually somewhat of an upset but three-win Garretson beating 13-7 West Central was likely as close to a “shocker” as we will see. Drew Blosmo scored 20 as he continues to have a strong run of play in February. Drew recently went over the 1,000 point mark. Record wise the Faulkton Area win over Leola/Frederick Area really stands out because the Trojans lost their regular season meeting to Leola Frederick by 20 points. Last night Faulkton Area won 52-46.
Tuesday Standouts. Sophomore Paul Bruns had a massive night in short minutes producing 28 points and 14 boards as Dakota Valley opened the playoffs with a 45 point victory. Trey King had 22 points and 16 boards in a Irene-Wakonda 61-55 win over Gayville-Volin. Sophomore Zane Schlabach had 22 in a win for Rapid City Christian, Junior Saw Ward scored 22 for Vermillion in their 67-54 win over Beresford, and freshman Kalen Garry had 24 for De Smet.
Hat Tip to the Career. Jackson Miller of West Central and Karst Hunter of Miller High School. Jackson Miller is coming off one of his better games of the season scoring 30 points in a victory over Elk Point-Jefferson. Miller also just had 17 fighting his way to a 48-47 win over Colman-Egan. Miller is a former first team all state 15u player and one of the tougher battlers in the paint there is. Future South Dakota State football player Karst Hunter grabbed the attention of the entire state in the last month scoring a school record 50 points one game, putting up 48 another game in February, and a few big number double-doubles.
