Another great group of games and prospects this past Friday and Saturday. Here we break down the players in attendance in O’Fallon Shootout: 2021 & 2022 Evaluations!
Class of 2021
SG James Dent (Springfield Southeast)
Dent opened our eyes with his play. We had heard some buzz, but this was our first eval of the rangy 6’4” wing. Very projectable frame to add strength and continue growing. Clean looking shot from deep and that is his strength at this stage. Knocked down 3-6 from beyond arc. Shot it with a ton of confidence. Also had a nice take through Clay for a bucket. Potential down the road defensively. Recorded 11 points and 3 steals.
PF Shaun Riley (O’Fallon)
Riley is a prospect that peaked our interest after watching him compete inside against Liddell. The 6’5” bouncy sophomore didn’t back down. He was explosive with his second jump getting five offensive rebounds. Hit a short jumper and cut to the hoop for a couple other buckets going for 10 points and 11 rebounds.
PG Drew Tebbe (O’Fallon)
Tebbe is another sophomore who stepped up. The O’Fallon 5’8” point guard was on fire from three as he went 4-4 from deep. Plus shooter that relocates to get open looks. He had 14 points.
SG Tommie Williams (Belleville West)
Williams is a 6’3” shooting guard that is ranked inside the top 20 of the sophomore class rankings. Right now he is a role player, but after the majority of the team graduates Belleville West will be his squad going forward. Plus athlete that played a nice all-around game on Friday against O’Fallon flying in for rebounds on both ends of the floor. Knocked down a catch and shoot three. Burst with the ball on a give and go. Got to the line knocking down all four of his attempts. His line read 9 points (2-2 FG), 6 rebounds, and 2 dimes.
PF KJ Debrick (Springfield Lanphier)
We were intrigued by this 6’7” post early in the season and he showed more tools that makes us think he has long term developmental potential. First is his frame and size. Moves well at 220 pounds. He is an outstanding area rebounder. Cleaner on the defensive glass. Also used his length to swat a couple shots. Needs to improve his touch finishing around the hoop as he missed several close shots and forced some threes, but like this kids potential. He had 2 points, 7 rebounds, and 2 blocks.
PF Corey Walker (Normal West)
Walker is another upside long term play to monitor. At 6’6” he has a strong body with decent mobility. Wasn’t overly aggressive offensively. Got to the line a few times where he knocked down most of his points. Like him as an area rebounder down the line. Went for 7 points and 3 rebounds.
PF Grant Newell (Whitney Young)
Newell has been a mainstay as a top 10 2021 prospect from the beginning. We like his ability to be a skilled and athletic face up four at the college level. At about 6’6” he should continue to grow. Played a decent amount of minutes off the bench against the huge Iowa City West front line. Did about as good as he could with their size advantage recording five rebounds including three offensive boards.
SG Ahamad Bynum (Simeon)
The state’s #4 2021 prospect is in the process of coming back from and injury. Came off the bench for the Wolverines. Had an acrobatic finish and played solid perimeter defense. Missed both of his three point attempts. Still trying to get back in the flow of things. Went for 2 points.
Class of 2022
PG Jaylen Drane (Simeon)
Drane projects as one of the top freshman in the state of Illinois. The combo guard is starting for one of the most prestigious programs in the state in his first year. He is a long and wiry guard that gets anywhere he wants on the floor. Tremendous speed in transition pushing end to end. He scored several times on coast to coast takes blowing past defenders. Hit a corner three early. Potential to be an elite perimeter defender. Quietly showed well as a passer too getting his weapons the ball in positions to succeed. Drane’s line read 8 points and 4 dimes.
C AJ Casey (Simeon)
Casey starts as a center for the Wolverines. I don’t think that has ever happened at Simeon for a freshman. Casey has special potential! The 6’8” center is extremely mobile getting up and down the floor with ease. Against one of the premier rebounders in the state in Liddell and a massive Belleville West front line Casey didn’t back down! He rebounded well in traffic especially recording a pair of 50/50 balls late. He had 2 points and 7 rebounds. Casey will battle Drane for the top spot in 2022.
PG Caleb Burton (O’Fallon)
Burton is a point guard at 6’0” that is definitely worth keeping tabs on out of the metro east. Played with a lot of confidence and overall took care of the ball having only three turnovers in the two games we saw him play. Showed potential as a passer. Burst off the bounce with the rock in his hands. Didn’t knock down shots at a high rate, but he has clean mechanics and a soft landing on it so he should improve as time goes on. Friday against Belleville West he had 7 points and 3 dimes.
SG Tye Banks (Springfield Lanphier)
Banks has a chance to be one of the best 2022 prospects in central Illinois. Didn’t score a ton in their game against Collinsville, but did have one explosive baseline slash. Did a nice job cleaning up the defensive glass. Solid passer too as he can play some on the ball. Line read 5 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 assists.
