Another great group of games and prospects this past Friday and Saturday. Here we break down the players in attendance in O’Fallon Shootout: 2019 Evaluations Part 1!
SF Donovan Clay (Alton)
Clay displayed his all-around game against Springfield Southeast. Has expanded his skill set a lot over the last year. Still a wing that can space the floor with his shooting, but the handles have gotten significantly better. Pushed it quite a few times in the open floor kicking to shooters. Probably the best we have seen him pass. Was active on the offensive glass for put backs including a huge dunk. Stuffed the stat sheet for 13 points (5-8 FG), 10 rebounds, and 5 assists. He gave a surprising commitment on Saturday to Valpo on the spot after getting offered.
SG Malik Smith (Alton)
Smith was a little less efficient with his shots, but still managed a quality outing. The athletic shooting guard played both on and off the ball. Drilled most of his field goals from three going 3-8 from deep. Also got to the line throughout. Did a good job on the defensive glass. He had 15 points and 9 rebounds.
SG Josh Rivers (Alton)
This 6’4” shooting guard has a crafty game. He seems to always be in the right spot to make a play. Not the best athlete he just has a knack for making plays. Rivers had a couple crafty takes to the hoop for layups. Also got on the offensive glass for a score. Finished with 15 points and 6 rebounds.
PG Terrion Murdix (Springfield Southeast)
Murdix is a point guard who has committed to Chicago State. The quick and shifty guard put himself on the map last March leading Southeast to a state title game appearance. He is excellent at using his speed going end to end in transition. Always has his head up looking to find teammates. In the half court he uses his slick handles to manipulate ball screens setting up jumpers or slippery drives to the cup. Lived in the lane scoring with acrobatic layups and runners. Got to the line hitting 9-10. Struggled shooting from three going 0-8 from deep. He had 23 points, 7 rebounds, and 5 assists in a win.
PF Michael Tyler (Springfield Southeast)
Tyler is an intriguing post prospect. He has size at 6’8” with long arms. The four man is an adequate rebounder that did a nice job grabbing boards in traffic. Active on the offensive glass getting second chance opportunities for his team. Good hands in the paint catching and finishing dump off passes. Rim protector on the defensive end of the floor with timing. He had 6 points, 7 rebounds, and 3 blocks.
PG Damon Davis (Springfield Southeast)
Davis is a compact 6’0” point guard that was a sound perimeter shooter. He knocked down all three of his attempts from beyond the arc. Power guard that is also a pesky on ball defender. Showed some small college potential scoring 15 points.
PF Karl Wright (Springfield Lanphier)
Wright was in foul trouble for much of the night. The undersized bouncy four man lives off his athleticism. Wowed the fans with a monster alley-oop dunk and several impressive blocks including two in a row. Knocked down a baseline jumper. He had 8 points, 4 rebounds, and 5 blocks.
PF EJ Liddell (Belleville West)
The state’s top senior prospect looked like he was going to have an epic career defining game early as he was completely dominant in the opening minutes against Simeon with monster dunks and swatting shots in the stands. He scared everyone when he came down with a serious ankle injury. After missing about half a quarter getting checked out by the medical team he came back in to a roar from the crowd. You could tell he wasn’t 100%, but the Ohio State commit gutted it out. He was still the best player on the floor. Connected on mid-range jumpers, runners, and scored a couple huge hoops on the block. Such an elite offensive rebounder. Also protected the rim on the interior. In the end like we saw on Friday it was his passing that stood out as he threw a skip pass to a teammate when he was doubled for the game winner. He had 21 points (8-15 FG), 8 rebounds, and 3 blocks.
PG Lawrence Brazil (Belleville West)
Brazil stepped up especially early in the game against Simeon. The point guard who continues to see his stock rise and is starting to receive some D2 interest drained an array of threes in the first half. Plus shooter off the catch and is also effective pulling up for three. Would like to see him diversify his scoring game a bit. All of his attempts were from three. High IQ point guard who runs the show and gets others involved. Brazil had 12 points and 4 dimes.
PF Keith Randolph (Belleville West)
Randolph is an Illinois football commit who is also a beast in the paint. The big bodied post does a great job at mauling his opponent for position and scoring with touch. Nimble footwork on the block and just like Liddell is great at sealing off his man for easy finishes. Gets to the charity stripe quite a bit. He had 13 points and 5 rebounds on Friday against O’Fallon.
SF Will Shumpert (Belleville West)
Shumpert is a physical wing that brings toughness on the boards. Also a versatile defender that can guard inside and on the perimeter. Usually a reliable shooter, but he really struggled from the field in both games.
SG Jaylin Mosby (Belleville West)
Mosby hit a shot that will be remembered for a long time as he drilled the game winning three for Belleville West in their win over Simeon. His role is to be the ultimate glue guy. Hit open shots when the bigs are doubled. Defend, share the ball, and crash the glass. Small college prospect.
