Region 8 is much different than last year in that there are several teams that seem to have great shots at advancing through and representing the region at the state tournament. There may not be a state title contender in the region but there are seven teams with winning records.
Here’s what you need to know about Region 8
Favorite: White Shield
White Shield has two forfeit losses on its record but is 14-2 on the year with just a close loss to Dunseith in the last two months. Frederick Fox and Jesse White give the Warriors a dynamic duo on the perimeter and lead one of the state’s best offenses.
Contenders: Ray, Powers Lake, Stanley
Ray heads into the postseason on an 11-game winning streak and has wins over pretty much all the other contenders in the region aside from White Shield which the Jays didn’t play during the regular season.
Powers Lake won 14 games including its last 11 of the regular season. The Ranchers have wins over Ray and Stanley and they play really good defense.
Stanley isn’t the juggernaut it was a year ago but the Blue Jays are still dangerous as they’ve got a really good duo in senior guard Seth Hetzel and junior forward Rhett Hanson.
In the Mix: Mandaree, New Town
Mandaree won 13 games during the regular season but lost a number of games due to forfeit. The Warriors have one of the best offenses in the region.
New Town hasn’t had a ton of success against some of the upper-echelon teams in the region but it has more than 10 wins and a very good defense.
