The end of the season is upon us at the Class B level. With the postseason right around the corner, we turn our attention to the district and regional tournaments.
Here are some things to know about Region 3
There might not be a clear-cut favorite
At this point, Region 3 looks pretty open given no team is truly running away in the standings. LaMoure/Litchville-Marion is the top team and likely goes in as the favorite given its success against the rest of the top teams but the Loboes have won games in nip-and-tuck fashion – not going away. Jamison Kramer, Shay Ness and Caleb Hirschkorn give the Loboes a reliable trio of scoring options which is something most teams in the region don’t have.
There are a lot of competitive teams
While there may not be a runaway favorite to win the region, it isn’t because the region as whole is bad. It’s just not top-heavy. Of the 13 teams in the region, nine average more points than they allow and seven have double-digit wins.
The team to watch in the region might be Carrington. The Cardinals have won four games in a row late in the year. They’ve played a tough schedule and they’ve got the individual talent it takes to make noise. Junior forward Seth Nelson is one of the dominant players in Class B and while the Cardinals struggle to generate scoring consistently around him, he’s capable of dominating a game single-handedly.
Kidder County is the top team at this point in District 6 though Linton/HMB and Strasburg/Zeeland are both right there too.
The games will likely be low-scoring
If you like fast-paced, high-flying affairs, this probably isn’t the region for you. Only two of the top eight teams average more than 60 points per game and none allow more than 55 points per game. It’s a slow-paced group of teams and there isn’t a ton of high-end individual talent capable of piling up crazy numbers of points.
With that in mind, it feels like this region could be more unpredictable than a lot of others where there might be a couple safe pick teams. That makes it exciting.
