Now a look at the first part of standouts from Day 2 of the Hoopfest.
ICYMI:
CJ Walker and Kaleb Coleman (Oak Ridge)
Scoring 19 points apiece, 2019 forwards CJ Walker and Kaleb Coleman were very steady alongside fellow 2019 starter Niven Glover. Walker, an Oregon commit used his length at 6’9″ to get inside early and flashed his improved deep ball. As for Coleman, the glue and most underrated piece for Oak Ridge over the last year and a half is a 6’7″ gifted shooter headed to Lipscomb. 2019 guard Emmanuel Adedoyin pitched in with 14 points of his own.
Vernon Carey Jr. and Scottie Barnes (University)
Combining for 30 points, University stars Vernon Carey Jr. and Scottie Barnes wowed the Tampa Bay crowd over and over in the victory over Berkeley Prep. Carey Jr., a 6’10” Duke commit had 16 points as he makes basketball look effortless with his advanced footwork, ballhandling and all around fitness. As for Barnes, the 2020 6’8″ guard will have his pick of the litter when it comes to college programs (he announced last week, he’s trimming his list to seven schools) as he orchestrated a 14-point day. Barnes is a high IQ passer, top end defender/shot blocker and a player who is only getting better as a shooter and overall scorer.
Kegan Karnes (Berkeley Prep)
Host Berkeley Prep earned two steady days from 2020 guard Kegan Karnes. The 6’0″ guard continues to be a force from long range, but his ability to slash to the basket and create for himself and others is boosted in his game. Karnes led his side with 17 points in the loss to University. 2022 forward CJ Hawkins and 2020 guard Varun Ajjarapu each had eight points.
Johni Broome and Kobe Knox (Tampa Catholic)
When Johni Broome arrived at Tampa Catholic this fall, he was simply trying to crack the starting lineup and make an impact. The 2020 6’8″ forward quickly made his presence felt and on Saturday, he was the best interior player on the floor in the win over The Villages. Broome added 20 points. Fellow 2020 starter, Kobe Knox also recorded 20 points with some big jumpers down the stretch. 2020 guards Alijah Harrison (16 points) and Marcellus Crutchfield (12 points) helped plenty.
Brandon Farmer (Villages)
In the back and forth battle against Tampa Catholic, 2019 6’7″ forward Brandon Farmer was the next best thing alongside Tre Mann. The lengthy athlete scored 17 points using his deep ball effectively and playing an active role as a rebounder on the glass. Farmer has gotten better each time I’ve seen him this season with his new squad. 2019 guard Terry Ivery added 11 points.
Selton Miguel (West Oaks)
In the opening game of the Saturday slate, 2020 6’5″ guard Selton Miguel proved to be the most effective scorer for West Oaks in the close victory over a scrappy St. Pete squad. Miguel’s upside is clear and he was unstoppable at times as an attacker on the way to a 17-point game. He has a nice shooting touch as well. 2019 forward Noble Crawford generated 13 points and is a prime post grad candidate with his 6’5″ length and pure athleticism. 2019 Auburn commit Tyrell Jones and 2021 guard AJ Neal each added 10 points.
Terell Strickland (St. Pete)
In front of a nice supporting home crowd that came over to the Tampa Bay area, 2019 St. Pete guard Terell Strickland picked up his play as the game moved forward. West Oaks made life awfully tough for the St. Pete guards with traps and presses, but Strickland was by far the most creative and strong athlete for the Green Devils, even at 5’10”. Strickland led his side with 15 points. 2019 guard Akhe McMichael had 12 points while 2019 forward Harlow Babb and 2021 guard Ray Perry Jr. each scored eight points.
