Now a look at the first part of standouts from Day 2 of the Hoopfest.
ICYMI: Day 1
Cade Cunningham (Montverde)
The most solid and reliable player I saw at the Hoopfest was 2020 Montverde G Cade Cunningham. The kid takes smart shots, finds good areas on the floor and never seems panicked. He’s a really good talent who led the Eagles with 26 points in the overpowering win over Oak Hill on ESPN. Cunningham has nice length and strength at 6’6″ and he’s able to win battles in transition.
Jaemyn Brakefield and AJ Hoggard (Huntington Prep)
In a comeback win against Oak Ridge, a pair of sophomores led the charge for Huntington Prep. 2020 6’8″ forward Jaemyn Brakefield shot at a high clip on his way to a 29-point performance while fellow 2020 6’4″ guard AJ Hoggard attacked often and got inside for 24 points. Brakefield is a long and bursty athlete while Hoggard is a physical driver and a guy who thrives on plays to the basket. 2019 Louisville commit Quinn Slazinski had 14 points including the late 3-pointer to send the game to overtime.
Precious Achiuwa (Montverde)
2019 Montverde F Precious Achiuwa was beyond active in the victory against Oak Hill. A pure and long athlete, he followed up his own misses, got inside and used every inch of his 6’9” frame. A freak of an athlete, Achiuwa is known for his flashy dunks and he had some in this one, but he was impressive as a distinctive player and going ahead with his decision making instead of waiting. His upside is endless.
Tre Mann (Villages)
It wasn’t the prettiest 25 points but 2019 UF commit Tre Mann seems to always be active as a shooter and overall playmaker. The 6’4″ Villages leader and pacesetter showcased his game often in the loss to Tampa Catholic. When he gets going, he’s hard to slow down.
Cam Thomas (Oak Hill)
A talented outside shooter, 2020 Oak Hill guard Cam Thomas was the best thing going for his side on the night. He had 26 points and display an added sense of attacking that I hadn’t seen before. Thomas put together some really tough lay-ins and showed even more of his all-around game. The 6’3″ guard is known as a shooter, but it looks like he’s adding more to his repertoire. 2019 guard Cole Anthony pitched in with 10 points.
Niven Glover (Oak Ridge)
Perhaps the most efficient and effective offensive performance I’ve seen from Niven Glover came here at the Hoopfest. The 2019 6’5″ Oak Ridge guard is one of the best dunkers in high school right now and has been featured on Sportscenter for his abilities. However, he’s doing more than ever as a pure basketball player and a confident shooter. Glover was displaying a smart selection for much of the game as a jump shooter. He still has plenty of work to do as a consistent threat, but a Division I program will be happy to develop him.
