Here are some of the teams that had particularly good weeks
Class A: Waterville-Elysian-Morristown
The Buccaneers haven’t shown any signs of slowing down this winter, as they picked up a big win last week, beating Hayfield to stay in the hunt to win the Gopher Conference title and at the top of Section 2A-North. Head coach Jeff Wagner also hit the 500-win mark. Wagner’s built WEM basketball up from seemingly nothing over the last 30 years into one of the most consistent programs in the state. He rarely has kids who solely focus on basketball, yet maximizes the talent he’s got by getting his kids to play smart and strong defensively.
Class AA: Melrose
The Dutchmen had one of the best wins of the season, beating previously undefeated Class A powerhouse BOLD to stay in the hunt to win the conference. Any thought of a letdown was debunked quickly as Melrose went out and beat Sauk Centre Saturday. The Dutchmen look like the favorite to come out of Section 6AA this season.
Class AAA: Mankato East
The Cougars had a terrific week and picked up a massive non-conference win over state-ranked Mahtomedi courtesy of a game-winning tip in from Jordan Merseth. The Cougars are the frontrunners to win the Big 9 and are a legitimate contender to play for a state championship this season. After graduating such a big senior class last year, this year has been super impressive.
Class AAAA: Park Center
The Pirates have been on a tear all season and picked up two more solid wins last week, getting closer to securing a Northwest Suburban Conference title. Park Center beat Champlin Park 71-54 in what could be a potential section final preview last Thursday before beating Totino-Grace 75-63 on Saturday.
