Here are some teams that had particularly good weeks:
Class A: Mahnomen/Waubun
The Thunderbirds have had an up-and-down kind of season to this point but remain a contender out of Section 6 because of their combination of talent and experience. They showed what they are capable of when playing at their best last week, blowing out Cass Lake-Bena, 64-36. Mahnomen lost to the Panthers by 33 in December. A 61-point turnaround is eye-opening. Buster Walker had a mammoth game in that one, scoring 29 points and hauling in 17 rebounds.
Class AA: Proctor
The Proctor Rails are 12-8 on the season but started the year 0-3. Currently sitting atop the standings in Section 7, the Rails earned a really solid 68-64 win over Hermantown last week, getting 26 points from Quincy Clark.
Class AAA: DeLaSalle
The Islanders are the heavy favorite to win the Class AAA state title but who’s to say they aren’t the best team in the state regardless of class. DeLaSalle earned two excellent wins last week, starting off by beating Hopkins 75-67 behind 23 points from Tyrell Terry and 16 from Jamison Battle. They backed that up with a dominant win over Holy Angels, getting 22 from Terry and 18 from Jalen Travis.
Class AAAA: Edina
The Hornets have been up and down this season but their 12-8 record is more a product of a grueling schedule than anything. Edina picked up two excellent wins last week, beating White Bear Lake 89-82 behind 31 points from Jack Middleton and 30 from Jacob Hutson, before beating Minnetonka 80-51. Middleton and Hutson are combining to average better than 45 points per game.
