The Falcons defeat the (17-1) Bears 61-55 but the game honestly wasn’t as close as the score showed. Leo Mackie, Isaiah Williams, and Desmond Lewis controlled the pace of the game throughout, while John Marshall’s Corey Coleman, Xavier Cyprian, and Patrick Garrett had impressive games, but couldn’t keep the same control that Millwood had.
Millwood led throughout this game and up until the final minutes of the third quarter, they had a double-digit lead. In the first half, the Falcons led by as many as 16 points and went into halftime with a 33-20 lead.
Some may say Millwood started to implode in the second half but truth be told, John Marshall stepped up their defense significantly, forcing 11 Millwood turnovers.
Why couldn’t John Marshall get over the hump and take the lead at any point in this game? Because every time they got within two possessions, their shot selection held them back. They were shooting too many threes when they could have driven the lane and gotten a shot at the rim, the one thing that worked for them in the first half.
Basically, John Marshal abandoned the one thing positive that they did in the first half, but stepped up where they slacked. Millwood was handing John Marshall the game on a silver platter, turning the ball over left-and-right, but due to the Bears negligence, Millwood was able to hold on to the win.
The Falcon’s trio of Mackie, Williams, and Lewis combined for 40 of the teams 61 points, which was impressive, but those late-game turnovers from seemingly whoever had the ball almost undid everything positive that they did.
As for the Bears, Coleman, Garrett, and Cyprian scored a combined 36 points and played spectacular defense down the stretch but a lackluster first half on the defensive end and poor shot selection in the second half hampered their chance of winning this game at home.
John Marshal falls to (17-2) on the season while Millwood improves to (18-2) the Bears won’t have it easy to close out their season with competitive games coming up against Northeast Classen, ranked No. 4 in 5A and undefeated Heritage Hall ranked first in class 4A.
