In their only showdown of the season, Wojtusik and the Oilers took down Saginaw High 70-67 to remain unbeaten on the year and secure a share of the Saginaw Valley League championship for the second year in a row. The Oilers (16-0) entered the week ranked 10th among Division 1 teams in the state of Michigan while the Trojans (13-3) stood strong at 4th in the state. Tyler Heunemann led Mt. Pleasant with 20 points while Peyton Fountain tallied 15. Jo Ostrowsky netted 11 in the win.
We recently had the chance to sit down with the speedy Oilers guard to get his thoughts on this season and the Oilers quest to make it to March without a loss.
What steps did you take in the offeseason to prepare for this season?
MW: In the off-season I did a lot of lifting and I worked hard on improving my jumper. Really, I was just staying in shape.
What are some of the goals your team has for this season?
MW: We have the same goals of every high school team – Getting to The Breslin. But we like to take it game by game, focusing on improving each and every time we play.
Individually, what are some of your goals for this season?
Mount Pleasant’s Mason WojtusikMW: I just want to win games. (Saginaw Valley League) MVP would be nice, but I’ll take wins over that any day.
What would you say is the biggest strength in your game?
MW: My ability to get to the rim, along with my mid range pull-up.
What do you need to improve on the most in order to take your game to the next level?
MW: I need to improve my three-point shot, get stronger and continue to work on my game overall.
When chatting it up with a college-level coach, what would you say you can bring to his program?
MW: I’ll bring a winning attitude. But I’ll do whatever is asked of me, wherever I end up going to college.
Who, or what, motivates you to work harder, both on and off the court?
MW: My family is who motivates me. My family and just my desire to improve both on and off the court,
Who is the toughest player you’ve ever had to match up against?
MW: toughest player would have to be Marcus Watson from Mac Irvin Fire.
What’s your favorite gym to play at, aside from home games?
MW: Aside from playing at home, I like playing in Midland High’s gym.
What is it that sets Mt. Pleasant’s program apart from the rest in the state?
MW: What sets us apart is how close we are both on the court off the court. We will all do whatever it takes to help us win.
What has been the most memorable moment/game of your high school career thus far?
MW: Winning districts my freshman year has to be the most memorable moment thus far.
If you had to compare your game to one player in college or the NBA, who would it be?
MW: If I had to compare my game I’d say I play like CJ McCollum (Portland Trailblazers) with less of a three-point shot.
What is your favorite subject in school and why?
MW: My favorites are Marketing and History.
What’s one song or artist that can get you pumped up before a game?
MW: I listen to a lot of 21 Savage.
Do your teammates have a nickname for you? If so, what is it and why?
MW: My teammates call me “Woj”.
