Mannford handled business against Fort Gibson nearly hitting the triple digits mark with both teams starters sitting the entire fourth quarter. Mannford took home the District Championship 94-55 continuing their undefeated season.
Fast Start
Mannford raced out to a 25-2 lead against Fort Gibson from the tip. The Tigers fought but could never get within striking distance after the lackluster start. The run was led by Jake Banfield at the Point. The pinpoint passes of Banfield set his teammates up for easy looks around the basket. The physical defense of Mannford gave Fort Gibson fits. It helped that the refs tonight allowed very physical play early in the game before tightening their while later on.
Cooper Hallman is blossoming
Hellman is a young prospect for Mannford that is blossoming before our eyes. This year Hallman has become the most skilled scorer on the team. It is clear his hard work in the gym is paying off not to mention it helps to have Banfield a ton at the Point. Hallman has a big summer ahead of him.
Conner Calavan tough as nails
Before the game I got a picture of Calavan’s ankle it was purple and red all the way up through his calf. Nevertheless, Calavan toughed it out taping up his ankle and giving it a go. He scored the first two baskets for Fort Gibson and although he was clearly not 100% he found ways to be effective. The night did not go as Fort Gibson would have hoped but with more rest, they will have an opportunity to go through the consolation bracket in Regionals with an improved ankle for Calavan.
Banfield is the key
The key to Mannford’s success is Banfield running the Point. On offense, he sees the floor arguably the best of any Point in the state. The extra stuff he brings to the floor from tough defense to leadership and many more intangible things are what separates him. Other teams would probably describe Banfield as a pest they can’t get rid of, but that is just it the kid never goes away. He would run through a wall for his team if they needed him to. Mannford is fortunate to have Banfield at the leading the way for their undefeated season.
Atmosphere
The atmosphere in the opening half was one of the best I have seen all year. It was a packed house on both sides of the gym full of fans eager to get the playoffs underway. Let’s hope this type of turnout continues as it does add a lot to the game.
Bonus
Mannford is undefeated but the things that could get them beat this year are free-throws and fouls. Tonight the game was never close for it to matter, but later on down the line in the playoffs they will need to shoot free-throws better and be careful not to foul out key guys.
