Continue ReadingJanuary is always a tough month of competition. Players battled hard. The 2019 class has been extremely focused. Watching these guys compete every night has been an absolute joy for their families, friends, schools, and opponents. I am one that believes “Iron sharpens Iron”. These guys are well familiar with each other at this point. This article looks at guys that elevated their play and raised their stock in January.
Trendon Watford (Mountain Brook): How can a 5 star recruit and the state’s No. 1 overall player raise his stock? Well, Trendon performed extremely well in a head to head matchup with James Wiseman (18-11-6 and the win). Watford earned a McDonald’s All-American Game roster spot, and he is a big reason why the Spartans are ranked in the top 10 Nationally.
Malik Tyson (Sparkman): Tyson has been one of the most steady players in the 2019 class. Every time he hits the floor, he brings his hard hat. This kid is a true competitor. He does it all offensively, and he guards multiple positions. Malik was critical to Sparkman winning the 7A Area 7 regular season title.
Kareem Thompson (Florence): Thompson is one of the most unselfish players in the state. He truly is a team first guy, and his play reflects that. Kareem has averaged 12-7-4 on the season, and he has a very low turnover percentage. This kid is efficient offensively, and active defensively (2.8 spg, 75 deflections, and 27 charges).
Austin Kelley (Pleasant Home): Kelley is an under the radar hybrid forward. He is 6’7 and can do everything on the court. On the season, Kelley averaged 21-12-4. He was very consistent through January, and Kelley’s recruitment picked up as a result of his play.
Indrek Sunelik (Nation Prep): What’s not to like about a 6’7-6’8 wing that can shoot the cover off the ball? Sunelik’s efficient offensive play has picked up the attention of coaches across the country. Indrek recently visited Georgetown, and Wichita St was on campus to see Indrek in person. With all the MM level coaches keep tabs on Sunelik, it is only a matter of time before someone turns up the heat on him.
BJ Comer (PCA): Comer continues to perform night in and night out. The best way to help your team is to perform well and get the win. That is what Comer has done. With Comer being a major catalyst, PCA claimed the Area regular season title and has been ranked in the top 5 in 3A all season. Look for Comer to continue his consistent play with a deep postseason run.
Eddie Smith (Huffman): Eddie is a competitor and does whatever his team needs from him, in order to win. Huffman kept winning, and Smith was a big reason why. Huffman clinched the Area regular season title, and Eddie played a huge role. Smith has averaged 19-3-3 on the season.
Ahman Ellington (Hoover): Ahman has been very consistent for Hoover all season, and often has been one of the best players on the court. He helped Hoover clinch the Area regular season title. Ellington’s consistent play has put him on the radar of several D2s in the southeast.
