It’s five straight and counting for this resurgent Maroons squad. After a 5-8 start to the season, Dowling all of a sudden sits at 10-8, and have several key wins over other top CIML talent. Just last night, they got by Des Moines North, which had won 11 straight games against Iowa teams. It’s been junior guard Matt Stillwill who’s been leading the charge for the Maroons, he’s averaging 17 points per game during the win-streak. Sophomore big-man Ryan Riggs has upped his game too during the streak, going for 14.8 points per game.
Linn-Mar
The Lions handed Waukee its first loss of the season last weekend, and that win was part of a now eight-game win streak for Linn-Mar. After a disappointing 3-4 start to the season, the Lions are now 11-4 and seemingly poised for a state tourney run. With one of the state’s best players, senior Trey Hutcheson, leading the way, we like the Lions’ chances to — at the very least — advance to a substate final.
Denison-Schleswig
With one of the state’s best inside/outside combos leading the way, Denison-Schleswig has emerged as one of Class 3A’s most formidable threats. Goanar Biliew is a 6’8 big-man averaging 18 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks per game. Point guard Charlie Wiebers is averaging 17 points, 4.6 assists and 3.2 steals per game. The Monarchs will look to make it seven in a row Friday night against 14-4 Glenwood.
Iowa City Regina
Masen Miller has been one of the best players in the state this season, he’s going for 20.3 points per game and is shooting the ball at a blistering rate. His Regals started the season at a respectable 5-2, and have themselves been blistering ever since, winners of 10 straight. The now 15-2 Regina squad checks in at No. 7 in the latest Class 2A rankings. They have Wells Fargo Arena on the mind.
Mason City Newman
The Catholic schools are rolling right now, and Newman is the third to make this list as a result of its six-game win streak. Actually, it’s not even the Knights’ longest win streak of the season. They won eight straight games earlier in the season before falling to Bishop Garrigan. It was after that loss when the Knights started their current win streak. It’s one of the more senior-laden squads in the state, led by athletic guard Josh Fitzgerald.
