The Wolverines have advanced to a district final, and it’s now eight wins and counting for the 2016 1A state champs. A group of juniors will lead South O’ Brien into the district final tomorrow night against George-Little Rock; Jackson Louscher, Zeke Lundquist, Alex Presthus and Tristan Wilson will need to gel well if they want to get by the 20-3 Mustangs and into a Substate final.
Pocahontas Area
Big wins over Lake Mills and Forest City have pushed the Indians’ win-streak to six games. That streak will certainly be put to the test Saturday night against undefeated Boyden-Hull, with the winner of that one advancing to the state tournament. Pocahontas Area will need a big game from senior guard Jace Davidson if they want to pull the Substate upset.
Winterset
It’s now five wins straight — and nine out of ten total — for the Huskies who after starting the season 4-4 have pushed their record to 14-6. They’ll face an 18-4 Carroll team Thursday night in a district semifinal. The winner of that would advance to play the winner of Creston and Denison-Schleswig for a chance to go to state. The backcourt duo of Casey Kleemeier and Easton Darling are good enough to push the Huskies into the state tourney.
Ankeny Centennial
Although it hasn’t been a banner season for the Jaguars, they’re certainly getting hot at the right time. Centennial started the season with a 4-12 record, which was among the worst in 4A. Now, after five straight wins, they’re 9-12, and heading into a Substate semifinal bursting with confidence. Still, they’ll need to play a near perfect game on Friday night to get past 18-2 Waukee. Can Cody McCullough and Micah Johnson help lead the Jags to the upset?
Pleasant Valley
The Spartans are heading into a Substate semifinal winners of five straight. And with seniors Hunter Snyder and Carter Duwa leading the charge, there’s reason to believe that the hot squad from Pleasant Valley might have a chance to upset mighty North Scott. The unbiased, analyzed and comprehensive Iowa sports ranking website bcmoorerankings.com predicts North Scott will win that one by 14 points. We think it’ll be closer than that.
