Cliff McCray and Co. have now won eight straight games, and seem to be on a fast-track to face crosstown rival Sioux City East in a substate final on Feb. 26. McCray is piecing together a Mr. Basketball-type season, and his Wolverines finished the regular season with a 16-4 mark. By the way, the potential substate final against the Black Raiders would be the third meeting between the two this season, East won the first two by a combined five points.
Cedar Rapids Prairie
It’s been since January 11 the last time Prairie lost a game, and in that time, the Hawks have run off seven straight wins. Considering they they had a six-game win streak earlier in the year, it’s safe to say that Keegan Murray, Kris Murray and Co. are one of the toughest teams to beat in Class 4A. They’ll begin substate play on Feb. 22, in a semifinal against the winner of Muscatine and Dubuque, Hempstead. A win there would set up a potential substate final against North Scott, which would be some must-watch hoops.
Fairfield
After two smaller win-streaks, the Trojans of Fairfield continue to get stronger as the season wears on, and are recently surging into the final week of the season with seven straight wins. This comes after they win three straight at the beginning of the year, then five straight in the middle of the year. A group of seniors, Austin Simpson, Tristan Waugh, Collin Breen and Carson Crile appear poised to make a deep postseason run in Class 3A.
Dike-New Hartford
Always a threat to make it to Wells Fargo Arena for the state tourney, Dike-New Hartford is again among the favorites to compete at state this year. The Wolverines have won 14 games in a row, among those are triumphs over Aplington-Parkersburg, West Fork and Denver. A pair of seniors is leading the way for the Wolverines, that’s Colton Harberts and Cade Fuller. The two of them are averaging a combined 31.2 points per game.
Exira-EHK
The seven consecutive games that Exira-EHK have won is not even the longest win-streak of the season; the Spartans bridged December and January with a 10 game win-streak. All that winning has led to a sterling 19-2 record, the only two losses coming to Ar-We-Va, those by a combined six points. Dakota Rold and Cole Burmeister have been sensational for the Spartans. The senior-laden Exira squad will likely see Ar-We-Va for a third time in a District 15 final on Feb. 21, buckle up.
