The Mustangs of Houston Christian faced the Knights of Episcopal High School with the SPC title on the line. The Houston matchup was a back and forth game full of momentum swings. The game was decided within the final minute as Houston Christian held on to their two-possession lead to become the back-to-back state champions of the Southwest Preparatory Conference.
Player Breakdown
Sahvir Wheeler / 5’8″/ PG / Houston Christian / 2019
Wheeler was fantastic in the last game of his high school career. No defender could stay in front of him. When he penetrated to the paint, he either found his teammates for open scores, drew fouls, or scored off of acrobatic finishes under the rim. He had a terrific weekend in Fort Worth and would be my pick for SPC Tournament MVP. The Texas A&M signee scored 17 points and dished out bunch of assists (as usual) in the championship win. A perfect way to end his historical high school career.
Ty Archibald / 6’0″/ PG / Houston Christian / 2019
Archibald was torching the Knights from downtown in the first half. He drilled three longballs and each were key momentum builders for the Mustangs. The unsigned senior scored 14 points in the contest and will be a long range threat wherever he elects to play basketball collegiately.
Noah Kon / 6’0″/ PG / Houston Christian / 2021
The sophomore guard has a strong frame and possesses elite athleticism. He performed well in the big game and even had an incredible chase down block where his head hit the rim. Kon is now the new leader of this Mustangs squad. He showcased what to expect over the next couple of years by dropping 19 points in win.
Kobe Haynes / 5’6″/ PG / Houston Christian / 2021
Haynes was another sophomore who performed well in the championship match. Coming off a 25-point performance vs. Oak Ridge, Haynes picked up right where he left off drilling a couple of threes en route to a ten-point performance. Along with Kon, he will be another feature backcourt member that will help the Mustangs compete for additional title appearances over the next two years.
Sam Torn / 6’2″/ SF / Houston Christian / 2019
Sam Torn deserves a bunch credit for the win. He scored timely buckets and was extremely active on the offensive glass in crucial situations. His last seven points as a high school basketball player came in the fourth quarter and each of them was much needed in the win.
D’Avian Houston / 6’1″ / PG / Houston Episcopal / 2020
The two-way guard came in ready to avenge last year’s championship loss. He was aggressive in getting to the paint and collecting points at the charity stripe. Houston scored 16 first half points and finished the game leading all scorers with 20 points in the rematch loss.
Final Thoughts
With four starters returning for their senior seasons, expect for Episcopal High School to return to the state championship game for the fourth consecutive time. At this point, I am pretty confident that they are tired of second place after achieving that feat the last four seasons. An early prediction for next year’s SPC Championship game would be a Dallas St. Mark’s vs. Episcopal High School matchup, with the Knights coming away with the victory.
