These teams are playing wonderful basketball at just the right time. While there are dominant teams throughout the state these particular teams are trending hot.
Morristown East
Morristown East was a meager 10-8 in the 2018 portion of their schedule. When that calendar flipped, so too did the Hurricane’s fate. Mo East destroyed Cocke County, Sevier County, Morristown West in MoWest’s gym, Daniel Boone, and Seymour in a fantastic 12-day early January period.
Connor Jordan’s 41-point night at Morristown West was incredible, but not rare at all. The Hurricanes are now sharing 2AAA first place with MoWest at 9-2.
Morristown East’s team is currently riding a 8-game winning wave. Sevier County gets in their way Tuesday night. Can they keep the Canes from crashing?
Sacred Heart of Jesus
SHJ is not a newly hot team, per se, but they are certainly playing sizzling hot basketball now.
Three losses by Thanksgiving hinted a treacherous campaign could be brewing. Fear not. SHJ was deep with upperclassmen largely unfazed by a sputtering start.
Rattling off 9 wins in their last ten, SHJ is the best contender capable of dethroning the mighty FACS Crusaders. Just typing that sentence felt tenuous. FACS continues to pummel every entrant in the gymnasium.
Franklin
Franklin High (20-4) keeps mowing down everything in sight. At 20-wins already, Franklin shouldn’t be allowed to be hotter. Somehow they are.
Only four teams finished with five points of Franklin in 2019 and the Rebels picked off quality wins at Brentwood and at Franklin Centennial.
Clarksville Northeast
The righting of the Clarksville Northeast (14-11) ship did not coincidently coincide with Alec Kegler’s return. Kegler was an All-Tournament Player in 2018 and his Eagles are playing like they want a postseason run in 2019.
Remember this team was 4-8 at one point.
Any team with a top 30 player has a chance.
Nolensville
The regal Knights of Nolensville High continue to overwhelm 12 AA. Though another improved team, the Marshall County Fighting K.J.’s , is nearby, 12AA is wrapped tightly inside the Nolensville Knight gauntlet.
Their seems to be a trend developing…each of the teams on this list feature a remarkable senior star. Seniors historically understand urgency better than any other high school hooper.
The NHS senior Nate Bloedorn presents defenses with a unique challenge. Even if he isn’t scoring, which he will be, Nate cleans the backboards like he is on an internship.
Wooden Notices Tennessee Ball
The Wooden Award released their Top 20 Watch List this week.
Of the twenty, four have Tennessee connections.
Dedric Lawson played for Hamilton High School and won the 2015 Class AAA State Championship. He played two seasons under Tubby Smith at the University of Memphis before testing NBA waters and then transferring to Kansas.
Grant Williams and Admiral Schofield played high school basketball in other states, but obviously compete now for the University of Tennessee Volunteers.
Nickeil Alexander-Walker played two years for Hamilton Heights Christian Academy Head Coach Zach Ferrell in Chattanooga, Tennessee. “NAW” ran with Shai Alexander in a long, explosive backcourt.
