Continue ReadingState contenders need to churn out some momentum in February and heading into March, which is why Prep Hoops Wisconsin has compiled a list of teams that are hitting their stride at the right time. Keep in mind that many of these teams won’t be the obvious candidates. So this will be a bit of a double-whammy. It’s a “dark horses that are also hot” sort of deal.
Seymour Thunder
Seymour has rolled through 13 of their last 15 games. At one point this materialized into a 10 game win streak, but they tripped over their own feet after getting upended in two of their last five games. Seymour has been supported offensively by Trent Blake, Mason Dorn, and Riley Murphy, three guys that combine for 48 ppg. After starting off the season 3-4, they’ve really heated up at the best time.
Mount Horeb Vikings
Horeb is 10 games deep into a winning streak that has sent them shooting up the conference ladder. Their latest win over Deforest clinched a conference victory, and they’re a win over Portage away from finishing on 11 consecutive wins, courtesy to some outstanding scoring from Gunnar Nortman (16.9 ppg), Jason Larsen (15.6 ppg), and Bryce Farnsworth (9.9 ppg).
Xavier Hawks
Xavier has pulled in nine of their last ten games, putting a stranglehold on first place in conference. Nick Otto has led them in scoring, engineering 20 point performances almost nightly, while Henry Egan (16.4 ppg) and John Bunks (13.3 ppg) have complimented him nicely. Xavier started the season taking hits from out of conference programs, but a late season surge has helped them punch their ticket into the top tier of division three teams.
Milwaukee Bay View Redcats
Bay View was on a 14 game tear, then hit a brick wall on Friday, playing Milwaukee Washington in Tre White’s “welcome to Wisconsin” party. But 14-1 in their last fifteen still qualifies for this list. Bay View wear the ensemble of prior contenders, at least offensively speaking. Of course, they have momentum, and they have Kevin Cook who is piling on 18.2 every night, while others like Shelton Williams-Dryden and Malcolm Pickett are averaging 15.7 and 14.5 points respectively. Not to mention, Kaleel McCray is scoring 12.9 as the fourth option.
Kimberly Papermakers
Kimberly has won seven straight after a shocking loss to Oshkosh West. On their run, they’ve beaten Neenah and Kaukauna, and they’re looking for eight straight with a win over Appleton West on Monday. Jake Buchanan has settled into his roles a facilitating guard, while Reed Miller and Levi Borchert have controlled the bulk of the scoring load.
