Hard Work Region Preview: Universal Athletics Academy
Although it is still in the middle of the high school basketball season in Illinois we are already looking ahead to the travel team circuit this spring. We will be previewing the teams participating in the PrepHoops Circuit Hard Work Region over the next few months.
Below is our chat with Marvin Grover of Universal Athletics Academy previewing this upcoming season!
Why did you start your program? How long have you been around?
I originally started the program because I wanted kids to have a different experience with AAU basketball in that they would have academic, social, and athletic support built around them. I thought it was important that they received preparation as if they would play at the next level not matter the division or conference. We’re going on our 6th year of being around now.
What is the goal of your program for 2019?
The main goal of our program is to build student athletes who are fundamentally sound both on and off the court and have opportunities to play in college if they so choose. Above all else we want our players building lifelong relationships with their teammates, coaches & program personnel.
Do you know of any players that will be back in your program this year? Who should we have our eye on?
One key player for us that is returning and got some college attention last year is LaQuan Mims from King High School in Chicago. He’s a 6’4 small forward junior who just had a strong game against Morgan Park in the city playoffs last week with 15 points & 7 rebounds.
Why did you choose the Prep Hoops Circuit?
I chose Prep Hoops because of how you guys run your tournaments. A big factor was that your tournaments are two days and teams play no more than 2 games a day. I believe that’s very beneficial to the player in not having to play 3 games in one day. I also believe you guys do a great job in covering high school basketball and giving kids and programs exposure that they may not otherwise have.
