Today, we are detailing one of those teams in Southern Indiana Shock. Director Steven Wingler talked with us about his program and this upcoming season.
Why did you start your program? How long have you been around?
I started the Shock program in the Fall of 2014 as a senior at Anderson. I have been coaching at various youth levels since I was a junior in high school. In the spring of 2013, I worked with close friend Isaac Loechle start his program, Indiana Legends. I saw how many players from my hometown area were missing out on the Grassroots Circuit experience and I wanted to give them that opportunity. I, along with former Associate Director Mike Janikowski, rolled out the Shock high school program (15U,16U,17U) in the spring of 2015. We have grow every year and this year the program will offer teams for boys and girls for grades 4th through 11th. We have mostly played in smaller events with MYT and IUSAB mixing in some bigger tournaments.
What is the goal of your program for 2019?
Our goal for the Shock program this year is to compete at a high level. I want to try to help each of our players have the adequate exposure to help them possibly continue their athletic careers at the collegiate level.
What is your program’s mission each year?
Our mission is to 1) have positive impacts on players’ lives. 2) Create a competitive environment to help each player can grow his abilities and confidence. 3) Help showcase each player and help them in the recruiting process. 4) Build champions on and off the court.
Do you know of any players that will be back in your program this year? Who should we have our eye on?
Trey Mollet and Reece Webster will be our two players that should make a lot of noise this summer. Trey has started a few games and been 6th man for BNL this season. He had a nice summer for us last year playing up on 17U and I think this year he is really going to take it to the next level. He is a combo that can facilitate as well as create scoring opportunities for himself.
Reece Webster is really having a stellar junior year. He recently broke the 1000 point barrier. He’s averaging just under 20 points a game. He was our leading scorer at 16U last year. He is a true leader and the kids seem to really resonate to him. He’s an extension of the coach.
Jackson Eve is new to our program but will be an anchor in the post for us. He will make an immediate impact for us and should have a great year.
Peyton Wert was our leading scorer on 15U last year and is a playmaker. He starts at Milan and is making a big impact for his high school. I expect to see much of the same from him from a leadership standpoint and in the stat book.
Bryce Bates was force on the boards for us last summer and he has broke his way into varsity minutes as a freshman at Hauser this year. He is very versatile and athletic and should do some great things this year.
Max Scherwing is a 6’6 center that has the shot blocking ability. He is raw offensively but is continuing to grow.
CJ is a two way swingman that was our leading scorer at 14U last year. He plays JV at Oldenburg and had a solid freshman season. I expect him to come in a really help us take this group to another level this season.
Why did you choose the Prep Hoops Circuit?
I choose to become a circuit program with the Circuit because Prep Hoops is the top name in prep news. The Prep Hoops Network cares more than just about the 5 star players and will evaluate all levels of players. I knew this is the best opportunity to put the Shock program in the forefront and showcase where our program is going. The Prep Hoops Network will make sure that college coaches know about players that can play at the next level and help get them the proper exposure.
