Today we look at Texas Elite-DJH5 who will have a team competing on the 17U circuit. This squad will be at the #GrindSzn Kickoff, Midwest Grind Session, and the Grind Region Finals.
Below is our chat with program director Johnny Tatum previewing this upcoming season:
Why did you start your program? How long have you been around?
DJH5 was started in 2010 by Stacy Houston. His son, Deion Jackson Houston, was a standout sophomore player at Duncanville High School (TX). He was killed in a car-train accident during the July live period. Stacy started the team in his honor. My nephew played for DJH5 in 2012 and Stacy was very instrumental in his college recruitment. I started coaching for the organization in 2013 as a way of paying it forward for everything he did for us.
What is the goal of your program for 2019?
Our goal for 2019 is to help our kids become better players and maximize their potential while getting them the exposure they need to hopefully further their education.
What is your program’s mission each year?
Our program’s mission each year is to learn “life lessons” beyond the basketball court.
Do you know of any players that will be back in your program this year? Who should we have our eye on?
Tyler Mitchell, Darius Whittington, Dawuan Mims, Xavier Golightly, and Josh Glasco all return from my 16U and I look for them to have a good showing. Elijah Beard, Jeremiah Hoskins, Zach Barsalou, and Tylor Johnson are newcomers that I think will turn some heads.
Why did your program choose the Prep Hoops Circuit?
Honestly, Dallas Showtyme. Erven “Big E” Davis is a guy I respect and know he always looks out for his kids. When I saw he was playing, did my research and saw established programs like RL9, Colorado Chaos, Texas Impact, Texas Tigers, All Arkansas Red, and Alabama Celtics then asked some college coaches and they spoke highly. I knew we had to be a part of it.
