Greensboro Day 67, Christ School 53
Greensboro Day School (30-5) defeated the Christ School (16-14), 67-53 to win the 4A North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association State Championship on Saturday at the Ravenscroft School in Raleigh.
It was the third straight state championship for the “Day School” and the school’s 11th overall. Coach Freddy Johnson has coached the Bengals to all of the 11 state championships and on Saturday, he picked up his 1,049th win at the school.
Christ School knocked down some threes early in the game and the Greenies led Greensboro Day, 15-11 after one quarter.
Greensboro Day’s defense tuned in at that point and the Bengals outscored their opponents, from near Asheville, 56-38 in the final three periods for the 67-53 win and the 4A State Championship.
Coach Johnson stated that his guards picked up their defense, after that first quarter. He also stated that his three posts – Nicholas Evtimov and Mike Fowler, both seniors, as well as sophomore Josh Taylor did a great job of defending the Greenies big man trio of Justice Ajogbor, Gabe Wiznitzer and De’ante Green.
The Greensboro trio not only outscored the three bigs from Christ School, 23-17, they also defended them well in doing so.
Evtimov, a 6-7 225, senior was the Bengals go-to man, inside, as he has been all season. He scored 13 points in the championship game, the same total he had in Greensboro Day’s 64-43 semifinal over Durham Academy on Friday.
Evtimov and guard Camren Hayes shared my MVP honors for the Final Four and the duo was joined on my “All Final Four” team by guard Carson McCorkle.
My 4A “All Final Four” team
Nicholas Evtimov, Greensboro Day
Camren Hayes, Greensboro Day
Carson McCorkle, Greensboro Day
Norance Berry, Christ School,
Justice Ajogbor, Christ School
Kojak Thompson, Christ School
Randy Johnson, Latin
Bryant Randleman, Durham Academy
Hayes led Greensboro Day with 17 points in the championship game. McCorkle, a sophomore, who has already committed to play for the Virginia Cavaliers added 14 points and I as I mentioned above, Evtimov finished with 13 points.
Kojack Thompson led Christ School with 15 points in the championship game,
while Norance Berry scored 13 and Gabe Wiznitzer had nine.
It was a team effort however, for the Bengals as their senior point guard, Austin Inge did his always steady job of running the team. He has 90+ wins in his three years at Greensboro Day.
Fellow seniors, including the aforementioned Mike Fowler and guard Banks Handy, also contributed, as did senior forward Noah Dunn, who missed all of the first semester, due to injury. Guard, Steven Key is another senior, who played his last high school game on Saturday.
