Carmel Continues To Dominate HSE
Last night was another example of Carmel’s dominance over Hamilton Southeastern as they won 57-40. It was only really close in the first quarter and while Carmel didn’t pull away, this game never felt like it was a competition.
Part of that was Aaron Etherington and Chris Grubbs struggles from the field. Neither were able to get anything to fall and a lot of that was luck. Carmel did a very good job defensively limiting easy shots but most of the misses for those two were in-and-out kind of shots.
The issue for Hamilton Southeastern is their inability to get past Carmel in the postseason. They have beaten Carmel in the regular season matchup the last two years but it wasn’t enough come March. The last time HSE had done so was 2013-14. This season could be another one if they can’t find a way to improve their offense against them.
Delta Rallies To Beat New Castle, Stay Unbeaten
Getting this far in the season and being undefeated is very tough to do, obviously. But it might almost feel like a break if you can finish the regular season undefeated as just a logical step. Well, after last night, Delta is just three games away.
After being down after the third quarter by 10 points, Delta rallied back to get a 61-55 win on Friday night. This was a huge win as they could potentially face them again in Sectionals. This was also a win over one of the most talented teams they will have faced all year.
Now, with only three games remaining and the only undefeated team in the state, Delta will look to finish it out against Rushville, Shelbyville, and Muncie Burris over the next two weeks.
Quick Hitters:
- Barr-Reeve got a win over South Knox last night, 46-43 to improved to 18-2 on the season. They have locked in after their two losses through the first half of the year and have had to grind out some wins. Come March, this team should be set to go for a run at State.
- Benton Central got a win over Tri-County last night to extend their winning streak to five games and are now sitting at 12-7 on the year. This is likely going to be the first year that they have gotten to double-figures in wins and also been above .500 since 2011-12. They also have the chance to win their most games, 14, since the 2005-06 season.
- Bloomfield has locked in and won 6 of their last 7 games to move to 12-6 including wins over South Knox and Washington this week. They could be a tough potential matchup for Barr-Reeve in 1A South but they will get a trial run as they meet on Feb. 22nd.
- We talked earlier this week about Columbus North and being a potential sleeper. Well, they did lose last night to Bloomington South but was able to take them to overtime. They might get one more chance to meet but CN should have the guns to do it and win this Sectional.
- Fort Wayne Carroll got a win last night over Fort Wayne Northrop and they now move to 13-4 on the season. They have been excellent after their rough start and a win over Northrop is huge. They are on a 8 game winning streak with wins over Northrop, Snider, Merrillville, Dwenger, and South.
- East Noble is a team that we knew was going to be good this year but has still kind of come in under the radar. After their wins over Bishop Dwenger and New Haven this week, they are now 16-2 on the year. Their toughest game comes next week as they face off against Homestead. That could be a true test of how far they can go this season.
- Gary West hung on last night to take down previously 1-loss Munster. This is a big win for them and a little bit of a tough one for Munster so late in the season. Gary West is a team that has been challenged this year and has the ability to win some big games later in March.
- Greenwood got a huge win last night over Plainfield. Plainfield has had some slip ups here at the end but still a good season overall. Greenwood hasn’t been great this season but has some surprising wins like this one, Beech Grove, and Whiteland.
- Hamilton Heights is a team to watch out for in Sectional 24. They are now 12-6 after a win last night against Westfield. They have had a really solid schedule and their only losses are to really good teams. However, they will have to go through Delta or New Castle to do it and neither will be easy.
- Bishop Chatard moves to 10-7 after a win over Park Tudor last night. They had lost four in a row against a fairly difficult schedule but that is a big program win. Their end of the season schedules does include University and Ritter, though.
- Jeffersonville is now 11-5 after a win over Evansville Reitz. Reitz has taken a big step back this back half of the schedule but still a good win for Jeffersonville who has been a little all over the map with some questionable losses.
- Lawrence North got a huge win over Ben Davis last night to move to 12-6. This has been a really rough year as they have had a tough time putting it all together but over the last two weeks they have wins over Center Grove and Ben Davis to give them some hope come Sectionals.
- Noblesville took down Brownsburg last night to move to 10-8 on the season. That is a massive win and kind of a gut punch for Brownsburg. For Noblesville, it gives them some momentum heading into Sectionals that they might be able to surprise someone. Not sure it hurts Brownsburg but not great for morale.
- Shenandoah got the win they needed to have. At this point in the season, at 16-1, their schedule didn’t give them Manu opportunities to get marquee wins. They first game against Mt. Vernon-Fortville but this is a way better one. Might be time to move them up the rankings.
- Terre Haute North has really turned their season around. They started off the year 0-6 but has since gone 10-2 with three straight here and last night they got a big win over Bloomington North in a close battle.
