TORRANCE, CA—There were many high-level games to choose from—including Fairfax/Centennial and Westchester/Rancho Christian. However, I ventured down to El Camino College with my buds Frank Burlison, Devin Ugland, and Bob Becker to check out the potentially epic match-up of Bishop Montgomery and Mater Dei. The Monarchs under the guidance of Gary McNight put on a clinic in their victory over the Knights.
However, that would not be enough for this hoop junkie as I clicked the television on and watched the LA City Championship between Fairfax and Westchester to finish off the night of great hoops.
Biggest Surprise
Daylen Williams (Fairfax)
2019, PF, 6-foot-7, 180 pounds
Joel’s Take: Williams has always been an enigma to us in the scouting world. He has the length, skills, and feet to be a Division 1 player. Well, all that came together in his magnificent performance versus rival Westchester in the LA City Championship. He converted buckets through contact, handed off some nifty assists, and protected the rim.
Will be missed
Will Crawford (Bishop Montgomery)
2019, PF, 6-foot-5, 210 pounds
Joel’s Take: Cheers to Doug Mitchell’s most consistent performer the last couple of seasons. Each and every season he improved his all-around game and he delivered time and time again inside-and-out. His 3-point shot is potent, defends well on the block, and he is a high IQ player.
Beast with a touch
Kaelen Allen (Westchester)
2019, PF, 6-foot-5, 240 pounds
Allen has long arms, nimble feet, and soft hands.Joel’s Take: The deceptively bouncy 5-man is gifted player inside the paint area. His nimble feet, soft hands, and long arms allows him to finish over the bigs and he knows how to carve out space.
Under the radar
Kevin Bethel (Westchester)
2019, CG, 6-foot-1, 155 pounds
Joel’s Take: Bethel’s best days of playing this game are ahead of him due to his ideal frame and shooting ability. He has the burst, length, and motor to be a solid two-way player at the next level. He is equally adept at playing both guard spots and his jump shot is improved.
The Next Step
Keith Dinwiddie (Fairfax)
2020, SG, 6-foot-1, 160 pounds
Joel’s Take: Dinwiddie is the owner of an impeccable looking jump shot. He has a feathery release, is always on balance, and he gets great lift on his shot. However, for him to be recruited at the Division 1 level, he needs to get much better in the areas of ball handling and decision-making. He struggles handling the ball against pressure and he needs to improve his ability to score in the mid-range area if the lane gets closed off.
