LONG BEACH, CA.— The CIF Southern Section playoffs have been firinig away on all cylinders with a number of high-leve games and spellbinding performances. The usual suspects—led by Sierra Canyon’s Kenyon Martin Jr. and Mater Dei’s super sophomore Wilhelm Breidenbach—crushed the competition with tenacity and skill. However, there were up-and-comers such as junior Andre Henry (St. Francis) and freshman sensation Amari Bailey (Sierra Canyon) showed what the future has in store.
Terren Frank (Sierra Canyon)
2020, PF, 6-foot-7, 200 pounds
Joel’s Take: Frank, who was out for quite some time because of a knee injury, has rounded into shape during Sierra Canyon’s championship run. The future finesse 4-man has a smooth shooting touch out to the 3-point line and he is deadly at the elbow. He plays at a great pace and has a high basketbal IQ. Improving his 1st step and overall explosiveness will enhance his stock.
DJ Davis (Corona/Centennial)
2020, SG, 5-foot-11, 155 pounds
Joel’s Take: Davis may be the most streaky scorer in Southern California. He can go on scoring runs that are a sight to see. He has tremendous confidence in his shot and his range extends to 25-feet—or maybe even farther. His handle is nifty in transition and he’ll toss out the occasional assist.
Harrison Hornery (Mater Dei)
2021, PF, 6-foot-8, 205 pounds
Joel’s Take: A season ago, Hornery was strictly a spot-up shooter. However, during the summer he added more to his game and it’s continuing to evolve during the high school season. His smooth jump shot is as potent as it’s ever been, but now he is finishing more in the paint and playing more physical at both ends of the floor.
Christian James (St. John Bosco)
2019, CG, 6-foot-2, 175 pounds
Joel’s Take: James is the catalyst for the Braves and he impacts the game in a number of ways. His IQ and overall skill set allows him to play on or off the ball. He can shoot it from deep or handle the point guard duties with aplomb. In transition his clever mindset allows him to finish over length and his pull-up game has improved.
Nick Davidson (Mater Dei)
2021, PF, 6-foot-7, 200 pounds
Joel’s Take: When scouts and coaches begin discussions on the most improved sophomores in Southern California, Davidson needs to be near the top. He is a versatile 4-man who has long arms, good feet, and soft hands. He is playing through contact more efficiently and his touch is impeccable out to the 3-point line.
