LONG BEACH, CA.— The CIF Southern Section playoffs have been firinig away on all cylinders with a number of high-leve games and spellbinding performances. The usual suspects—led by Sierra Canyon’s Kenyon Martin Jr. and Mater Dei’s super sophomore Wilhelm Breidenbach—crushed the competition with tenacity and skill. However, there were up-and-comers such as junior Andre Henry (St. Francis) and freshman sensation Amari Bailey (Sierra Canyon) showed what the future has in store.
Amari Bailey (Sierra Canyon)
2022, WF/PG, 6-foot-4, 170 pounds
Joel’s Take: It’s safe to say that Amari Bailey is the best freshman in So-Cal. The long-armed wing-type has a point guard feel to his game and his athleticism is off the charts. He blitzes up the court and will either attack the rim with a vengeance or snap a nifty assist to an open teammate. The development of a consistent jump shot will a key component in his development.
Nick Schrader (Bishop Montgomery)
2019, PF, 6-foot-5, 195 pounds
Joel’s Take: The evolution of his game is one of the many reason why I have invested in the scouting business. Schrader should have a role at some level of college basketball—he just gets too much done on the court for not this to happen. Post ups and the ability to stretch the floor from deep are just a skills he brings to a game.
Jacob Alamudun (Marina)
2019, WF, 6-foot-5, 195 pounds
Joel’s Take: Lehigh got a good one in Mr. Alamudun. The physical wing-type can score inside and out. He uses his strength to bully his way to the rim, but yet still has enough finesse in his game to drop in deep 3-point shots.
Paris Dawson (Corona/Centennial)
2020, CG, 6-foot, 160 pounds
Joel’s Take: Dawson isn’t great at any particular area of the game, but he is solid in a number of areas. His motor is non-stop and he is fearless at both ends. He slides his feet, has active hands, and isn’t afraid to battle inside for loose balls. Offensively, he can drop in shots from a number of areas.
Christian Koloko (Sierra Canyon)
2019, C, 6-foot-11, 210 pounds
Joel’s Take: As with most bigs, their best basketball is down the road. In the Open Division Championship game, Koloko demonstrated that he has the physical tools to play beyond college. His rim protection is impressive (excellent timing) and he has the necessary ingredients to be an offensive force including quick feet, tremendous length, and excellent timing.
