LONG BEACH, CA.— The CIF Southern Section playoffs have been firinig away on all cylinders with a number of high-leve games and spellbinding performances. The usual suspects—led by Sierra Canyon’s Kenyon Martin Jr. and Mater Dei’s super sophomore Wilhelm Breidenbach—crushed the competition with tenacity and skill. However, there were up-and-comers such as junior Andre Henry (St. Francis) and freshman sensation Amari Bailey (Sierra Canyon) showed what the future has in store.
KJ Martin (Sierra Canyon)
2019, PF, 6-foot-5, 200 pounds
Joel’s Take: Martin is a high-flying 4-man who affects the game at both ends While his teammate Scotty Pippen Jr. runs the offense with aplomb, Martin is the eraser at the defensive end while providing game changing plays on the offensive end via the slam dunk.
Wilhelm Breidenbach (Mater Dei)
2021, PF, 6-foot-8, 200 pounds
Joel’s Take: The most unique prospect in Southern California may be Breidenbach. The ambidextrous 4-man has a feathery touch to the stripe, delivers timely assists both in the half court set as well as in transition, and he’ll bang on you as well.
Onyeka Okongwu (Chino Hills)
2019, PF, 6-foot-8, 225 pounds
Joel’s Take: Okongwu wasn’t his usual efficient self versus Santa Margarita—and it really comes as no surprise considering the consistent triple teams he faced afternoon. On the flipside he was 15-of-16 from the freethrow line and converted a number of diffcult shots in the paint area.
Scotty Pippen Jr. (Sierra Canyon)
2019, PG, 6-foot-1, 165 pounds
Joel’s Take: Pippen Jr., who is headed to Vanderbilt, is the perimeter catalyst for Sierra Canyon. He is a quality on-ball defender, competes at a high level, and has improved all aspects of his scoring package and perimeter defense.
Max Agbonkpolo (Santa Margarita)
2019, WF, 6-foot-9, 195 pounds
Joel’s Take: The USC-bound wing-type put togehter some highlight reel finishes inside and out. Gliding lay-ups in transition and tough two-dribble pull-ups were part of the scoring package. He can get sloppy with the ball, but overall his upside is immense.
Cassius Stanley (Sierra Canyon)
2019, SG, 6-foot-5, 195 pounds
Joel’s Take: The Stanley I envisioned 4 years ago was on full display in the championship game. The physical tools have always been there, but the confidence, savvy, and efficiency were inconsistent. However, this weekend his game was tight inside and out with it’s usual display of off-the-charts athleticism.
