We are going to go through each class and detail four teams to pay attention to that are under-the-radar heading into the tournament. The rules for this are we can’t pick a team that is ranked by AP Poll Top 10 and we want one team from each region of the state.
Team From Sectional 33-36: Winamac
With Westview looking like a great beat in this Regional, there are a number of teams you could pick that have a chance to play spoiler. The best one for our money is Winamac. They are 13-4 overall, 6-1 against 2A teams, and 3-0 against their Sectional. They should be the favorite to get out of their Sectional and in their four losses, they were pretty much in all of them with the Argos loss being by 8 points. With an easier path to the second weekend, this might be the pick here.
Team From Sectional 37-40: Tipton
Could have definitely gone a few different ways here but Tipton is 13-3 and 7-0 against their class. Their only losses came from Hamilton Heights, Westfield, and Northwestern. They have beaten Frankton this year which could come in handy in Regionals, which will run their Frankton/Lapel again this year. Watch for Feb. 21st as they host Lapel to end the regular season. That should tell us a little more about their likelihood of making it to Semistate.
Team From Sectional 41-44: Triton Central
So let’s start with the obvious, this is the most difficult region to pick of all that we have done. There isn’t a great answer and picking Triton Central comes missing a lot of those things we have sought for in the past, marquee wins, tough schedule, overpowering offense. The one thing it does have going for it, that you can get away with more now as a 2A school is they have one of the best shooters/scorers in the state in Wyatt Felling. He is having a big year. Now, he will need a lot of help as they are only 8-11 on the season and don’t have a great win but one guy might be able to make a difference here.
Team From Sectional 45-48: Tell City
There are a ton of options in this region to pick from but Tell City looks like the best bet of the bunch. While they have Forest Park and Mater Dei in their Sectional, Tell City has the best overall record at 16-4 and they are 8-1 against the class, 5-1 against teams in their Sectional with their only loss to Mater Dei by just 3. They have size and their defense is pretty good, holding opponents to just 41.6 ppg. This is a team that could easily get through Sectionals and have a legit shot at a Regional Championship as well.
