Early in the second quarter, the Mustangs were leading Pella 15-8. Then things turned, fast; from that point, the Dutch would outscore DC-G 60 to 28.
It was Logan Shetterly who helped get Pella (14-4) back on track. The 6-foot junior scored 14 points in the third quarter, that’s when the game was busted wide-open. The Dutch outscored DC-G 28-12 in the third.
Tonight was tough for the Mustangs’ top two scorers, Cole Glasgow and Luke Rankin could never get going, they combined for eight points in the loss. Junior Chase Stratton, who averages 1.7 points per game, led the Mustangs (6-12) with seven points off the bench.
Shetterly was magnificent in the win for Pella, he scored a game-high 25, and was 8-9 shooting, 2-3 from deep and 7-8 from the free-throw line.

Five Takeaways
Shetterly Does Not Disappoint
There were several reasons we wanted to come and check this game out. One big reason was to see Logan Shetterly, who has emerged as a star junior in the state, and the clear best player on this really good Pella squad. He started slow, and didn’t score in the first quarter, but was dominant in the second and third quarters. His drive to the hoop and then and-one bank shot while falling sideways out of bounds was a nice glimpse into his skill and athleticism. His 14 third quarter points was one of the better quarters we’ve seen this season from a player. He was smart, poised, extremely efficient and we’re glad we got to the game to watch him.
DC-G Youngsters Held in Check
Another big reason we went to this game was to check out the young back-court that DC-G boasts. Freshman Cole Glasgow is one of the state’s best 2022 prospects, and came into the game leading the Mustangs with 12.5 points per game. Sophomore Luke Rankin, a coach’s son, was averaging 12.1 points coming into this one. Neither of them could get going, though. In the first half, the duo was held to just three points, that from a pretty Glasgow 3-ball. Together, they scored eight points in the game, five from Glasgow and three from Rankin. We’ve seen them both excel in situations prior to this game, and we see the numbers they’re posting this season, so we’ll chalk this up to a bad night, that’s all.
Pella is the Real Deal
Pella is almost always good, and after a down year last winter, they are certainly back in state-title contention-mode this season. It’s a complete squad, with all the tools necessary to make a deep run into the post-season. Logan Shetterling is a real deal point guard for the Dutch, who’s averaging better than 18 points per game this season. Down low, there’s thick, 6’6 big-man Nick DeJong, an Iowa Hawkeyes football recruit who can handle his business on the hardwood, too. Surrounding those two are a slew of tall, skilled role players that help make the Dutch as formidable as any team in the 3A field.
Freshman Impact
We at Prep Hoops Iowa are getting ready to unveil our Class of 2022 Watch List, and it looks like we found two guys that will be put on the exclusive list tonight. One of them, Dallas Center-Grimes sharpshooter Cole Glasgow, was already going to be on the list. But Pella wing wing Karl Miller played his way onto the list after showing some nice skill while netting five points tonight for the Dutch. Any time a freshman even cracks the varsity’s lineup on a top team in the state, it’s a pretty good indicator of the talent they possess. Expect both Glasgow and Miller to show up on the impending list.
Watson is AD of the Year
Steve Watson was honored at halftime for being named the 2019 AD of the Year in the state of Iowa. For 25 years, Watson has been the AD at Dallas Center-Grimes, he’s been working at the school for 31 years. Dallas Center-Grimes superintendent Scott Grimes was on-hand, and all the coaches at DC-G came out to surround Watson while he was being honored. Watson’s son, Tony Watson was an all-state pitcher at DC-G from 1999 to 2003. He’s enjoyed an eight-year Major League Baseball career, and was an All-Star with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2014.
