Gouin Might be the State’s Most Improved Player
Rarely do you see a prospect in his senior year seemingly come out of nowhere and be one of the state’s most dangerous scorers.
Putting up a game-high 29 points on Thursday, Tyler Gouin continued his breakout campaign and elevated his stock.
Gouin is so dynamic off the dribble. He has a deadly pull-up jumper from 3-point range and has the confidence to take shots very early in possessions. A speedy, skilled floor general, Gouin can counter with a hesitation blow-by and finish at full speed at the rim.
Currently No. 41 in our class of 2020 rankings, Gouin is pushing for a top 30 spot by season’s end.
Gilmore Continues to Rise
The 4-6 spots in our next class of 2020 rankings are pretty fluid right now. Carter Gilmore, Isaac Lindsey, and Dalton Banks all make strong cases for that fourth spot.
On Thursday, Gilmore made a great case for himself, racking up 23 points, 20 rebounds, nine assists, and two blocks.
The edge Gilmore has is versatility and upside. He can play/defend multiple positions and create mismatch problems for the opposition that the others can’t. Is he as skilled as the other two right now? Probably not, but in terms of being a high major prospect, Gilmore may have the best case when it comes to attracting those schools.
A point forward who can run an offense by creating shots or being the team’s primary facilitator, Gilmore has a unique skill set. He definitely opened our eyes with Phenom University and was a key role player for them. If he can build off last summer and hold his own in the 17U Division of the Nike EYBL, he’s got a great case for moving up to No. 4 in the 2020 class.
Makinen Needs to be Big in March
He had a strong performance, scoring a team-high 14 points, but if Muskego is going to make a run in March, they’ll need big things from senior guard A.J. Makinen.
A crafty scorer who has deep range and can do some things off the dribble, Makinen had some impressive moments Thursday night. Part of a very small lineup, Makinen is surrounded by shooters, which gives him plenty of space to operate.
The Warriors have had some big wins this season, knocking off Arrowhead, Waukesha West, and New Berlin Eisenhower. However, this is a team that’s struggling going into the playoffs, having lost five-straight games.
Hytinen is a Sleeper to Know
He played well the first time we laid eyes on him earlier this season and did so once again on Thursday.
Arrowhead 2021 wing Sam Hytinen has a chance to be a really nice player in the Classic Eight Conference and a fine college prospect. The 6-foot-3 sophomore can stretch the floor and shoot it from 3-point range. When he gets to the rim, Hytinen has really good feet and can get defenders in the air or off-balance with a series of fakes.
A smooth slasher with length that’s tough to match up with, Hytinen showed some more impressive flashes and will be an x-factor for the Warhawks this season and likely turn into a strong running mate for Gilmore in the future.
Arrowhead Will Be Dangerous in March
As far as 4-seeds go, Arrowhead is as strong as it gets, and in most other sectionals, would have a case to be a 2 or a 3-seed.
Unfortunately for them, they’ll have to go through the likes of Sussex Hamilton, Homestead, Brookfield East, and Brookfield Central in order to get to Madison. Regardless, the gap between 1-5 isn’t all that great and should make for an exciting week of basketball.
After a season-opening loss to Milwaukee King, Arrowhead won 11-straight games and their only three losses since have all come by five points or less. The Warhawks are now riding a six-game winning streak going into the playoffs with an average margin of victory of 23.0 ppg.
