Continue ReadingOn Tuesday night I went to Gonzaga to see them play host to Bishop O’Connell in an important WCAC game. The game went back and forth all night long as it was a one point game going into the 4th quarter but the home team of Gonzaga pulled away and won by a final score of 71-57. Here I break down five takeaways from the game.
Gonzaga Is Rollin
Winners of 9 straight, Gonzaga has founds its groove and starting to play its best basketball at the right time of year. Steve Turner has his starting point guard back and healthy after 2020 Chuck Harris was out for a few games with a sprained ankle. 2020 Terrance Williams has been terrific from about 15 feet in, 2019 Anwar Gill continues to attack the rim hard, 2020 Myles Stute has been terrific on the boards and they are getting solid bench production. They hope to have 2019 Brown commit Josh Watts back this week after he suffered a concussion but the Eagles are trending in the right direction heading towards post-season play.
2021 Brayon Freeman Went Off
The sophomore guard was the first guy off the bench for O’Connell and made his presence known right when he stepped onto the court. He scored the ball at all three levels last night finishing with 23 points including four three pointers. If O’Connell had a little more production from other guys they might have been able to walk away from Gonzaga with a victory.
2022 Devin Dinkins Is One To Watch
What a defensive performance from the young 5’9 freshman of Gonzaga. Devin is going to end up being one of the best defensive players in the local MD/DC class as he is a pesky on ball defender. He caused four turnovers late in the 2nd half and had Steve Turner’s trust late in the game. Gonzaga outscored O’Connell 23-10 in the 4th quarter and a large part of that is due to Devin.
O’Connell Shakes Lineup
There was a new starting lineup out for O’Connell that I had not seen all year. Joe Wootten did not start 2019 Charlie Weber as instead his starting lineup was 2019 Ayan Teel, 2020 Marcus Dockery, 2020 Jahmal Banks, 2021 Wesley Peterson and 2020 Theodore Gadsden. Charlie was the 2nd man off the bench for O’Connell and did some nice things in the first half on both sides of the ball but Gonzaga held him to nothing in the 2nd half.
Best Story To Watch Moving Forward
This was a pivotal late season conference game in the WCAC. Right now the win moved Gonzaga to 4th and O’Connell to 5th in the WCAC. Both teams have 6 conference games left and are going to continue to fight for those 3-5 seeds in the conference tournament.
