While both teams still trail Kimberly, Kaukauna’s win put them in sole possession of second place in the FVA. If the Papermakers do slip up down the stretch, the Ghosts will have a shot a winning the conference in an improbable way.
Wisconsin-Superior May Have Gotten a Steal In Brayden Ivory
Brayden Ivory took over in the first 18 minutes of play. Ivory was extremely active and impressive. In the first half, Ivory carried the Ghosts, leading his team with 16 points at the halfway mark. The senior guard was one of the main reasons that Kaukauna was able to stretch their lead to 12 at the half. Most of Ivory’s work was done in the first half, but he still finished with 19 points. If Brayden Ivory is able to consistently play this well, Kaukauna will be a very tough out in March.
Will Mahoney is One of the Best Point Guards in Wisconsin
It would be hard to name too many point guards in Wisconsin who are better than Will Mahoney. Mahoney is extremely quick and very difficult to guard. In the 87-80 loss, he finished with 22 points. Mahoney is capable of knocking down jump shots, but his specialty is using his speed to get to the rim and finish. The guard was at his best in the first half, scoring 15 out of his 22 points. But credit Kaukauna, the Ghosts were able to limit the star guard to just seven second-half points. If Mahoney was not slowed down in the second half, this could have been a much more interesting game.
Donovan Ivory is as Good as it Gets in the FVA
In the first half, Brayden Ivory was the star of the show. However, in the second period, Donovan Ivory returned to his usual form. Ivory was slowed down by the Terrors in the first half, scoring just four points. Although Ivory got going again right away in the second half. After a threatening 8-0 Appleton West run, Ivory scored a quick five points to make the Kaukauna lead more comfortable. The senior forward took over the rest of the ballgame and led his team to the victory.
Jacob Newhouse’s Stock is on the Rise
Jacob Newhouse did not have his best game, but he was still productive and he put up some decent numbers. Newhouse scored 15 points in the Kaukauna win. Newhouse is just a junior and he will have the luxury of being able to improve over this offseason. Last night, Newhouse cleaned up the glass, protected the paint, and showed off a couple of his fancy post moves. Newhouse made a lot of improvements over this past offseason, but I expect him to make an even bigger jump heading into his senior year.
Kaukauna’s Depth Won the Game
Kaukauna has not typically been a team that relies on its depth to win games, but on Monday night, the Ghosts got some help from their bench. Seth Kamenick scored six points and provided his team with some good minutes. Jordan Strohl only scored one point, but he was able to play effectively at point guard after Keaton Ferris fouled out. Carson Sipple tallied three points. Logan Jedwabny also chipped in 14 points
